Hey.there..so.I.finally.got.around.to.changing.the.distributor

flange.seal.on.my.76.02...well.like.an.idiot.I.marked.the.cap.postion.

but.thought.the.button.would.stay.still.for.the.operation..and.lost.my.

timing....

here's.the.interesting.bit.though..while.trying.to.get.my.timing.back.by.

ear.I.am.turning.it.clockwise.and.as.it.starts.bogging.down.the.leak.

returns(ie..oil.hits.the.manifold.and.starts.smoking...as,I,back.off

(turn.it.counter.clock.wise).the.leak.stops....I.go.back.clockwise.it.starts.

etc.etc...Sooooo..first.question...WTF?

Second.question..I.have.it.farily.well.timed.now.and.since.I.now.can

run.the.breather.hose.to.the.airfilter.without.driving.in.a.cloud.of.smoke..it.runs.nice.and.fast..however.I'm.worried.cuz.the.engine.feels.a.little.hot...is.it.possible.to.burn.up.an.engine.by.having.it.timed.wrong??

I.did.accidently.run.it.for.about.2.miles.with.pretty.low.coolant.since.I.had.to.move.the.heater.hose.to.get.a.socket.behind.the.distributor...but.after.refilling.it.the.needle.is.staying.below.the.halfway.mark.

Weird about the leaky dizzy housing, something is wrong there.... I can't picture it right off, but it shouldn't be leaking bad enough to throw oil out.

What exactly did you replace?? Just the dist. housing gasket? Did you replace the o-ring around the dist. shaft? Did you replace the special o-ring washer that goes under one of the dist housing bolts??? The last one is VERY important, and often overlooked.

Are you sure the oil is not leaking past an exhaust stud and dropping onto the manifold?? A common problem with loose studs...you should be able to pull the leaky stud out, put some loctite or something on it and reinstall to help with the leak. Make sure the threads are clean + dry before you do the loctite trick.

Oh, and yeah- it's possibly to toast an engine with messed up timing- need to fix that soon.

I.didn't.replace.the.O.ring..I.did.inspect.the.bolt.seal.i.think...it's.metal.

right??..on.the.farthest.from.reach.bolt.on.the.top.right?..aka.the.shorter.

bolt...if.there.is.something.other.than.a.little.thick.metal.washer.I.am

.pretty.sure.it.was.missing.

It.is.possible.the.current.leak.is.coming.from.elsewhere..though.while.

changing.the.seal.I.had.to.do.alot.of.waiting.and.drying.as.their.was.a.

slight.leak.coming.from.the.bottom.of.the.distributor.housing(maybe.just.standing.oil?)

right.now.my.primary.concern.is.the.timing.though...do.I.want.to.turn.it.

clockwise.till.I.hear.pinging.up.a.hill.and.then.turn.counter.clockwise.till.

it.ceases?..or.is.it.the.oposite?

is.this.method.pretty.trust.worthy?
