My '71 02 PROJECT

not much to comment on at this point. it's all about reassembly now. it's very satisfying. most of the parts were cleaned previously so i'm getting the enjoyment of pulling cleaned, painted parts out of nice little zip-lock bags. it's still alot of time sorting through stuff.

thought i'd post a little progress. suspension parts are being readied for reinstallation. i've replaced all rubber bushings, ball joints, strut inserts. i'm reusing the OEM springs, strut bearings and all hardware.

i took extra care to try to seal up the bottom of the struts to prevent the three attachment bolts from rusting in place. i used Permatex gasket sealer around the seam and on top of the exposed bolt end as shown in the photo below. the inner nut received a coating of rust preventative before assembly. hopefully the next person who does this job will benefit from this added effort.

space is such a premium in my little shed that i'm forced to work atop my 02 as can be seen.

i'm making decent progress lately and i'm actually doing just a little work on two other cars in between. but, my focus is definitely on this car. i WILL complete it. hopefully in time for the Palo Alto meet in may.

progress to date includes a milestone: Headliner is installed!!!!!!!!!!!

i am very happy to have this task behind me. it's really not difficult, just takes time and patience.

i have most of the rear suspension installed. next up is doing some final rust preventative spraying inside the rocker cavities and then putting some sound deadener on the interior.

i also need to clean and apply new gaskets to the engine to doll it up a bit. i will be reinstalling a single barrel solex and air cleaner to this car.

headliner is perfect fit. you really did a great job.

did you pull out that motor from your sis car yet?

i haven't touched the automatic since last week. i'm prepping its replacement engine as well as this car's engine prior to installation. i have an opportunity to strip parts where i work, so i'm taking advantage of the opportunity. it affects my progress but there is no substitute for cleaned, blasted and repainted parts. this chance only comes twice a year, (while the night shift supervisor's on vacation...). a case of RedBull caffienated drink to the cleaning department and i'm good to go.

i would like to see how you do it. i know its easy and basic, i hope. but it'll be additional knowledge for me. i learn fast when i see doing it in actual.

Hey Jerry, nice work!

What headlining are you using?

Todd

i used the ones from Goliners on ePay. i'm pleased with it so far and it was easy to stretch into position. i bought a pair of headliners from them and have yet to install the other one.

thought i should post a picture to prove that i have not stopped working on this car. i have been VERY busy the past couple weeks sandblasting and painting miscellaneous parts including THREE complete sets of steel rims, so now i'll have a painted set for this car and my white car and my tii (whenever i get to it).

i finished the battery relocation installation with the mounting of the distribution block on the firewall. next up is spraying some rubberized undercoating in the rocker panel cavities and laying down some sound deadner. as soon as i get back on my dash refresh i'll install it then the windshields can be installed.

i'm making progress on this car and am very exited about finishing it. i rehabbed the dash yesterday and am VERY satisfied at how it turned out. i took a very tired dash from a 72 (with the seat belt fasten sign), filled the cracks with flexible bondo (after cleaning and sanding beforehand) when i was satisfied with the results i sprayed SEM brand textured paint over the whole dash. the cracks did not disappear but the appearance was greatly improved. i finished with a spray of Landau Black vinyl spray paint from Eastwood. Overall a much improved appearance. worth the effort. yes, some of the cracks are still visible, but the overall appearance is SO much better.

i installed the front windshield today. unfortunately, my original cracked during storage so i used an older clear windshield. it looks fine and i'm only sorry my brother left before getting the rear windshield in. oh well, there's always tomorrow.

next up is the rear windshield. the engine will be detailed and reassembled with the original single-barrel solex carburetor.

the engine/transmission will be installed before the carpet. i can't wait.

got to do a little woodworking and be able to call it 02 work. very limited opportunity to actually incorporate woodworking into an 02 project. typically i've recoiled in horror at the wooden consoles that appear on occasion. for the most part they appear to be someone's highschool woodworking project. it just ain't right.

anyhow, my cars suffer from warped door panels as is common. i need several sets so i decided to make my own. it's been on the back burner for quite awhile so i decided to tackle it once and for all.

i made a few rear shelf boards too. it's not worth the effort for one car, but if several sets are needed the effort is justified to save money. i merely stacked them to make the cuts and finish shaped them with a hand plane.

final touch was a coat of urethane i had lying around.
