Progress on the bmw1602.com car ...** UPDATED 09/16/24 *

Since parts of my carburetor broke off, I wanted to be extra safe and take a look and see if I saw any debris inside my engine or any obvious damage. So looks like I got super lucky. Everything looks pretty good. My inexpensive amazon borescope did it's job!

 

Pretty cool to see what the more hidden parts of my engine look like after 14 hours of racing.

Wow!! Just picked up a freshly “Vapor Honed” diff cover for my new differential from Dino @db2motorwerks_llc and I am just so impressed by the results!! Honestly if your restoring anything and don’t use this service you are an idiot! The surface finish is just absolutely incredible, honestly I was planning on painting it but now that I have seen it in person I’m going to leave it just like this. Probably be more thermally conductive anyway. Honestly this method is completely non destructive as far as I can tell (opposed to media blasting) and it seams to almost seal the surface somehow. It’s a smooth very much non-pourous finish. Completely opposite of sandblasting that leaves a very stain prone rough finish. I also dropped off some pistons with him also and I can’t wait to see what they will look like. Absolutely perfect and I can confidently say it probably looks better than new! I can’t recommend this service enough. I wish he was around back when started my racetoration.

Absolutely no sweeter sight to have a few days after the crazy tough race weekend I had..... in a way this is a moment 20+ years in the making..... made possible by @frank_franker from PowderWheels..... I have never done a “unboxing video”in my life but these deserve one. I have dreamed of these wheels for as long as I have dreamed of a BMW race car...... now to have a racecar on these wheels.....well, who says dreams don’t come true

These are the Pistons I pulled from my lightly used "Autocross" engine .... 

 

Took them to Dino at @db2motorwerks_llc and well........the results speak for themselves.

 

Absolutely Incredible results. They look better than new. Which is convinient since I just put them for sale 

 

Buy them here

 

 

The results are stunning. I want to vapor hone everything now.

Well..... what do we have here... this explains all my clearance problems of my idler arm and my header.... looks like I have a seriously bent subframe/idler arm.... I can’t imagine what this was doing to my alignment as the suspension traveled up and down and I was turning ?‍♂️ not sure how I and others have gone this long and not noticed this. Now... how dafuck do we fix this? Just bend it back with a massive pipe? Is the subframe bent or the idler arm? Humm..... anyways just the first of many issues we hope to tackle over the next week here at Kevin’s shop. This car just keeps on giving.... ???‍♂️ #RacePrep continues ...

The hits keep on coming! The good thing is I think we now know the main source of a lot of the vibration was.... guibo is tweaked, meaning the tranny mount/position in relation to the center driveshaft support is not aligned..... making the guibo act like a u-joint which it’s not..... probably causing massive vibrations...the fix is simple on this one. Adjust the Tranny mount and shim the center support and align everything up....not sure how I never noticed this before. Sometimes you just need fresh eyes on things to see what your not seeing or don’t know enough to see.... #themoreyouknow #RacePrep continues ..

BBS 3pc. mags race wheels..... the stuff of my dreams... I finally have my own set, I’ve wanted one since my first e30M3 and watching DTM on my VCR......which one did I get my hands on? Honestly they are all damn sexy. Something about those polished lips and a bronze centers....#periodcordect as they say!! ... time to unbox my dream wheels today!!!

Enough teasing.....?.... here is the moment I saw my dream wheels for the first time, now recorded for posterity. Coolest unboxing video you’ll see today ?? @frank_franker from PowderWheels gets a A++ on packing!! Wow! Packed up safe for anything FedEx can throw at it!! It took me way longer than my anxiety wanted it to take to even get to the rims let alone pull them out. I’m in love ❤️ .... #dreamwheels in hands!! 20+ years in the making......

 

Now after putting on the car and seeing it shine in the sun.....the wheels have inspired me to make the car look as good as the wheels...time to choose a new color and livery for the car.....I have a few ideas/contenders......and after seeing the wheels....maybe a winner......

 

Sorry for the long boring video......but I just had to capture this big moment!

So..... now we know why the clutch was slipping and probably caused vibrations also..... the metal straps on the (pretty new) IE racing pressure plate tore off/cracked/bent itself. Surprised how thin they are when compared to other “racing” pressure plates. Also found some play and other issues with the shifting mechanism which didn’t help anything either... at least we are finding and fixing lots of problems... #RacePrep continues ...

So the bolts on my rear control arms were almost finger tight allowing the eccentric adjusters to most likely move around changing my camber and toe willy nilly... I’m going to say that’s why my car was not handling right during the last race.... that along with my funky bent front subframe/idler arm probably messing with my alignment ..... ?‍♂️ what a hot mess... the upside is I’m learning and we are finding and addressing the issues! .. #RacePrep continues ...
