Funny, I tried running a vin through that site and got an error message as well.

realoem.com will tell you small details, not totally in depth.

I am pretty sure you put the last 7 characters in to get it to work... which is the whole 2002 VIN unless I am mistaken. It has worked here a number of times for me. Make sure your vin is 100% correct...

Or possibly they dont have information for before a certain period??

If its like the BMW ETK, they will have VINs after BMW NA bought out Hoffman in ~75 or so. My '76 VIN works fine in the ETK.

i've got VIN 2576240, built 7/19/71, late model

and VIN 2570440, built 3/5/71, early model

looks like they were pushing out about 1000+/month from the factory
