Hey Y'all

I've been working with a guy from out of state that wants to buy my 02tii. Does anyone have experience or advice they would like to share on how to conduct this transaction safely? I would appreciate any input whatsoever. Thanks, Steve.

Here is how I have done it:

1. Payment via paypal deposit and cash for balance.

2. Seller signs over title using procedures of seller's state.

3. Buyer takes out insurance for the VIN and shows insurance card to seller.

4. If buyer seems trustworthy, promises to take blame for any traffic violations on the drive home, buyer borrows plate with promise that they will mail plate back to seller after they make the drive home.

I would not let him take the platethat was registered to me. Most of the (southern, at least) states allow about 10 days after a purchase to obtain new tags

state residents who are buying a car in your state and then taking it home with them. Call your local tag agency to get the procedures... Don't let your own plate go with the car--that's asking for trouble...

Risky, but this is how I did it --

#1 Settle on Price

#2 Overnight a $500 deposit

#3 Seller sends "invoice" for amount paid, owed, etc.

#4 I wired the balance to the seller

#5 Seller overnighted the signed title to me with bill of sale

#6 Seller delivered car to shipping terminal, sent the car with valid California plates.

#7 I drove in my state with the CA plates, bill of sale and title for up to 31 days

#8 I register in my state and install my new plates.

#9 Car is no longer registered in CA, plate is "expired"
