That is the result of PissPoorParenting.

If I even thought of taking something, I get this sharp pain in the back of my head. (memories of my mom cuffing me upside the head).

Some people are just weak and can not resist temptation. I try not to test them. The deal with nobody locking their doors on the rallies is that nobody has working door locks. And as far as leaving the keys in the ignition, kinda hard to steal a car that takes 10 minutes to start.
