FAQERS IN INDIANA???

i lived nearby for 6 years. that's a suburb west of indy. typically, carmel (pronounced Karmill) and zionsville are the 'to-go' school districts for kids.

i never heard anything BAD about plainsfield schools. didn't hear anything good either.

whatcha got up your sleeve?

job one: get a winter beater so our local road salt doesn't eat your car.

you should also talk to Schwartz 75 and eastsidebimmer--they both live in Indy and can provide additional advice on the area.

But won't you miss that Alabama accent?

Slightly SouthWest of Indianapolis along US 40 (National Road) -- Growing area, new open air mall, schools are fine, don't hear too much about them.

If you need to live on the west side, also try Avon and Brownsburg.

Zionsville and Carmel are a smidgen elite, southside is a little blue, but getting fancier, eastside where I'm from (the oldest and earliest "nice part" of town 80 years ago) has a nice historical area where I used to live and is an OK place. Schools can be rough in the Indy Public School Area, stick to any of the surrounding township schools in Marion county. If you like to spend more than an hour in the car driving to work, try Northeast --Fishers or Noblesville. Finally, my hometown of Greenfield is 20 miles due East of downtown, also on US 40 but the other direction from Plainfield. This area is growing, schools are good and homes are a little cheaper.

If you have specific questions, please let me know--I'll try to be honest. Email me your needs and I'll try to recommend something. I now live due north 10 miles of downtown, bigger house, better school now that I've got a boy.

The "Circle City" is laid out like a wagon wheel with most streets also on a grid. Twisties might exist in southern Indiana, which is really another state. :)

Twisties are down, southern Indiana. About an hour drive and I can get you in some fun stuff. :D

eastside has it right. Watch your tax rates in the 'growing' areas (Westfield, Fishers, Noblestucky, Avon). Because of the massive expansion, they are constantly re-doing (upping) our taxes.

A good rule of thumb. Only visit inside the 465 loop. Don't live there, don't send your kids to school there. LOL

hey, hold on a second. when i moved there in 1995 i bought a POS victorian in the 'hood' downtown (21st & n. new jersey). at the time i had to clean up the occasional heroin needle or condom in the back alley. there was an active revitalization going on and a pioneer spirit. most of my neighbors were middle class. i sold it in 2003 for more than 10X original price and the new buyers of the area were definitely upper middle class. i was part of the gentrification of that area. now, back in california, i feel like the class being gentrified out of my neighborhood. the irony does not escape me.

btw, there is now a charter school in the area too. however, housing market sucks right now according to an old girlfriend who took her house off the market in Irvington.

The occasional 'pocket' is the exception, not the norm. I have alot of friends inside the loop. I just wouldn't send my kids to any of the IPS Schools.

Of course, exactly where Elizabethtown is! And it was also the star of the recent feature film 'Elizabethtown.'!

E-Town is just across the river from Louisville, yet among beautiful twisty country backroads. It's also nearby legal gambling on the riverboat casino!

Aw crap, maybe I oughta go over there and pitch a tent on my property.

Not everything inside I-465 is the hood. I live just inside, and plan to send my kids to public schools in Washington Township. I did leave Irvington last year for a bigger house and better schools, but there are many good schools and areas inside the loop

I felt that a school system without diversity would not be realistic in most real world situations.

I live in chesterton...where the hell is plainfield?

Lake (the southern part of the county), porter and part of laporte county have very good school systems. Fishers and certain areas of Indy have very good school systems Let me know what part of the state and I'll try to give a better answer.
