Repaint - help me decide - change color?

I have a chamonix white 1972 BMW 2002tii - a few nicks here and there, unpainted lower front valence. It has also had its front and rear bumpers and grill removed, but I have them all.

The look right now is similar to the logo for this site, minus the grill and fog light holes.

Anyway, I have a great painter who I am thinking I will send the car to for a nice color+clear job and put the bumpers and grill back on.

Now I am debating color - do I stick with white or do I do the BMW version of resale red (which would be what? Inka orange?) Do I do white with some kind of historically correct striping? Anyone have an example of this? The car is mechanically great and very tweaked for performance, so it is quite possible the next owner would race it as is.

I have a few cars, some I would never change the bone stock color because the cars themselves are all original. This BMW is highly original, rust free with a beautiful saddle brown interior - but it has also been worked over by a BMW 2002 specialist - engine, tranny, suspension, wheels, etc.

Any thoughts?

Unless you are doing a full body respray inside and out, I personally think a same color paintjob will help hold the long term value of your car.

For Example, if given the choice of two identical cars, one in Jade and one with Jade interior and a Verona exterior, I'd take the plain Jade all the way.

This is just one young man's personal opinion.

Yo-

My '73tii was originally Chamonix/Navy but is currently Polaris/Navy. While the silver has grown on me and does compliment the interior well, when I repaint I'm returning to white. That'll help long-term/resale value and I believe that the earlier cars are so pretty that white helps accentuate the car's simple yet elegant lines.

Red is dead IMHO, and just doesn't look right on an '02. Inka, Colorado, and Gulf Yellow are all cool, look right at home on an '02 and are VERY '70's, but what will people like/value in 5-10 yrs? Just my humble opinion, the choice is yours-whatever floats your boat!

Most importantly, enjoy it, a '72tii is a desirable beast indeed!

I would keep it Chamonix.

Take a look at John Weese's sweet Chamonix tii and you'll probably agree with me.

You made Hugo blush! :-) Thank you my friend!

Original colors are great, but certainly not required. It's your car. But, I didn't really care for Chamonix "until" Hugo came along...when done properly, I think you will be surprised how sweet Chamonix looks!

Good Luck,

John

Saddle brown was used with Sahara, Nevada, Malaga and Agave paint (and probably some others).

Unless it was some kind of very special order, either the exterior color or the interior has been changed. The brown interior came with tan/grey carpets--does your car have that, or the salt & pepper ones that were used with the blue and black interiors?

If I were to do a complete color change including engine bay, door jams and trunk I would choose one of the period to '73 2002 metallic colors like...

Baikal Blau 042

Nacht Blau 040, a Coupe color; very special order on an '02

Tundra Grun 068

Tiaga Grun 072

They're period yet striking, timeless, rare and all came with your saddle brown interior.

On the other hand if I were not going to do a full complete color change I would stick with the Chamonix.
