Starter Motor, and Crane XR700?

Recommended Posts

starter motor is below the intake manifold and attached to the engine block with two bolts.

there is a nice writeup on the XR-3000 that should give you the info you need. find it on the 02FAQ section listed in the top banner

The top bolt on the starter can be difficult to loosen and tighten.

There are two ways to skin the cat. Some place a zip tie around the nut to hold it.

I like using a hex head cap bolt and use an allen wrench to hold it in place.

The write up on the Crane installation is very good, also the tech support line at Crane is helpful too.

To find the starter, open the hood & locate the Battery.

Follow the Battery + cable you will see were it connects to the starter.

No prob man. Just didn't expect it here. Ok. So I looked at my starter and where its positioned and I don't see how to take it out. It looks to me like I need to take out the whole manifold and the Carb to get to the mounting brackets and to even have enough room to be able to take it out of the car. Is there an easier way or am I right? I'm kind of overwhelmed seeing as this is the first car I have ever worked on and I have never learned much about any engine machines more complicated then a lawnmower engine. I am a quick learner and pick mechanical things up very quickly though. It's kind of my thing : )

So yea, what do I need to take out to get to the starter engine?

Cheers from the German!!!

The shop manual is the best, they pop up on e-bay sometime.

If you can find someone who has one, $80 at Kinkos will get you one too.

Other than that, get the Hayes Manual or the Restoration Manual by McCartney.

Sorry I can not help you on the carb question. Not too familiar with those things.

No need to take the manifold and carb out to remove the starter. Space is tight, but it can be done.

I removed mine to install the S14 starter, which is a breeze to install, given its small size. You might want to upgrade yours while you are at it.

or things may spark and you will let the smoke out of the wires.

And many of us know what happens when you let the smoke out....

If you let the smoke out, you can not put it back in and things do not work.

To reach the brackets, you need small hands or long extensions. I use long extensions to get to the bolts on the bracket that is on the block.
