Yup. I got an answer.

The BMW 1600 US VIN 1567172 was manufactured on November 22nd, 1968 and

delivered on December 3rd, 1968 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New

York City. The original colour was Chamonix, paint code 085.

So it was built in 1968 but is a 1969.

Makes sense, from what I understand, the "Delivered to Importer" lingo means the date the ownership was transfered to Max H from BMW, not the date it arrived in to the dealer's lot. It would be interesting to know about how long it took for ship transport from der motherland to the US port of entry (where was this?) and then railed/trucked to the dealerships.

interesting thing is that it was a European "tourist delivery" car that was picked up at the factory in February of 1969 (the original service books with the factory delivery stamp and service stamps from a couple of dealers in Europe are still with the car, along with the tourist plates), so it was never physically delivered to Hoffman.
