Recharging Behr A/C

If the system has been empty for some time, you will need to replace some items, the reciever drier at a minimum. Also depending on what refrigerant used, R12 or R134a, the drier will have to be compatible. The lubricant in the compressor is refrigerant specific as well. Then after all is correct, you will need to draw a vacuum for at least 30 minutes to ensure the system has no leaks. Then you are ready to recharge using a set of hi/low pressure gauges also refrigerant specific. If you will be using R134a, you need to consider new barrier hoses. R12 is not available to the general public unless you have a license to handle it.

I have a similar dilemma. The system is still under pressure according to my old R12 gauges. I thought about taking it to a shop to vacuum the system and then recharge it.

Hypothetically, if this were the good old days, and I just purged the system. How long would it typically take to vacuum the system?

How long would it typically take to recharge the system?

When vacuuming or recharging/refilling the system with R12, must the engine be running and the airconditioner compressor be running?

Danke

Rule of thumb is thirty minutes minimum.

About an hour to an hour and a half, provided there are no problems.

Yes
