E21 Throwout Bearings: 323i vs. 320i

I was reading the FAQ 5 speed conversion page and it noted to use a 323i throwout bearing. I'm pretty sure that mine is a 32oi unit. What's the difference? It seems that I would have burnt up a clutch by now if the 320i unit didn't let the clutch engage enough....and I haven't.

Thanks in advance.

as i understand it, the 323i T/O bearing is appropriate for the 228mm flywheel/clutch assy as used on pre-74 cars.

the 320i T/O bearing is appropriate for use on the smaller diameter (forgot diameter...) flywheel/clutch assy as used on the squaretails.

since i'm assuming you have a 76 02, you're good as is.

Jerry is on the money. The earlier cars like mine(69) had a 228 mm clutch where yours has a 215mm setup. I just finished a five speed(yesterday!) and used the 323 TO bearing. You need the 320i part, if memory serves me right.

My motor is from a `74 (non-tii) and I can't remember which clutch is on it. We rebuilt it a few years ago and I can't remember what we used. I do know that I have a 320i TO bearing, though.

So, if I had the wrong one, I'd know it, right? Funny sounds?
