wiper arm detail

I know this is a crazy question. My son wants to know why the drivers side wiper arm has the "scoop" and the other does not. I hate it when I can't offer an answer to a 12 year old. I just told him the driver seat has many advantages, the cool wiper was just one.

This is easy. The drivers side has it to keep that side clear to see. The passengers does not because they do not need to see. Even BMW's today are the same. Only the drivers side has the air scoop. It is simply to ensure the driver car see while driving.

scoop wipers don't work above 95mph. Just a little FYI

they lift about 1/2 way up.

too bad none of us law-abiding citizens in good standing will ever experience that phenomenon.

heck, my 3.91 diff would have to spin like mad to attain that speed...

It also has to do w/ the fact that the driver's arm catches wind differently from being near the outside edge of the car when it's in the more vertical position. The passenger wiper @ that point is more toward the center of the windshield and does not get effected the same way.

You should try a 4:11 at 85-90 mph....

maybe? I have pictures of the RHD models back in the day straight from the factory have the airfoil (scoop) only on the right-handside. These wipers and mechanism are otherwise the same as the left hand drive cars

I added a deflector-equipped wiper arm to the passenger side, figuring it would keep the blade in better contact with the glass.

Perhaps we can add an extra high-mounted wing such as was done on the E30 EVO M3.
