How-to identify Tii struts?

The spindles are bigger in diameter,

and the caliper bolt holes are further apart.

On the car, the dust cap for the standard strut is flat at the end

where it sticks through the wheel,

while the tii version is rounded. And bigger!

I don't have dimensions here...

TobyB...Im still learning here...but if that is so about the differences,...can the volvo/320i disc /hub set up also work on the tii struts/......? Or do most use that mod w/ std non tii struts?

Ahh, yes-

do a search for big tii brakes.

standard strut- volvo caliper, late (80-93) 320 hub.

tii strut- 530i caliper, early (77-79) 320 hub. This actually works better,

as the Volvo caliper hangs out about 3/16" too far.

And the bearings are mas macha.

So no, you can't use the Volvo caliper on a tii strut, but you get something

comparable that fits better.

Thats great info...thx!!! When you say 3/16" too far"...what do you mean?...the wheel bearings wear faster or?.....

Hello,

I was wondering how one identifies Tii struts vs. standard 02 struts?

Thanks!

Just following up...

I found another way to identify the tii strut: I measured the distance between the bolt holes and it measured 3.5". I then pulled of the wheel and found this:

struts001.jpg

Looks like NOS tii struts put on by the previous owner -- he has said he put new struts on the car, pleased to find such nice tii struts. The car was imported from Germany -- so I was not able to check these details until the car arrived.

Cheers,

DJM

I was thinking bigger brakes (TII) but I have new bilstiens, I can't remember and its raining or I'd just check it out, I don't remember that the strut came with the spindel, seemed to me you loaded the shock into the strut

anyway can you just buy TII spindels and use my old bilstien shocks? We are talking the front, it just seemed the two were seperate pieces

maybe I'm crazy

I need to ID my struts on my Tii.

I did not have this pic handy while working on the car today and I measured A instead of C.

IMG_1973.jpg

A looks like 3.25 to 3.5". Based on the pics below -- where A seems similar in dimension to C, I would say this is a Tii strut.

The number on the strut tube was:

102127-4250

BOGE

11024431

BUT, the cap on the outside is flat not round.

So -- what do I have?

Hello,

That is what I was looking for -- thanks!

measure C. scroll up to lee's post for distance.

The first clue is indeed to measure "C" at 3.5" but beware...

Yup, the warning is that it could also be (very, very slight chances) that you have a Neue Klasse Ti strut with 3.5" "C" distance too. But let's remember that the Neue Klasse Ti and 2002 Ti/Tii struts are different. On the NK Ti struts, those caliper mounting points are located further away from the spindle (center) and fitting a vented caliper on an e21 disc will result in pads with ovehang, above the disc. A couple of members here have had that problem. I also tested it with Roy Hopkins who had NK Ti struts thinking they were Tii... ;-(

reviving older thread....

sooo....were there two versions of the tii struts with slightly different axle profiles? look at below pics. axle dimensions are the same, yet one has a thicker center section with a pronounced "step" before the outer bearing.

both tii?

the one on the left looks like the same profile as the one in the comparison pics further up in this thread.

this is a pic from jimG of one of his tii stuts. looks like my strut on the right.
