M30 transmission onto an M10

I've searched pretty hard and only come up with oblique references to whether it is possible to fit a big six (M30) manual gearbox onto an M10 - does anyone know?

Background info:

- have M10

- thinking about turbo and 200rwhp

- used only for racing

- S14 gearboxes not available here

- alternative is Toyota W55/57/58 with custom bellhousing and clutch (easily available here, as it happens).

The stock M10 gear box can handle 200rwhp easily, I pumped over 400hp through mine without any problems.

an m30 tranny will bolt on an m10 block, you may want to look for ones from a 1985 e23/e24/e28 or early e12/e24 from 1978-1981 CR5 speeds, you may or may not have to replace the input shaft. i know the ones from an '85 which is one with the removable bell housing will bolt on to an S14 and m10

Yep it fits straight on the engine. You have to shorten the shifter assembly, shorten the mainshaft and fit the big guibo flange, make some - actually quite a lot - more room in the tranny tunnel.

It's a good choice. I have had one in my racecar for about 8 or 7 years and I've done nothing but change oil for it.

Thanks guys.

On that basis it's possible and probably more cost effective than the Toyota route, but I might try the Otis way first.

Would you use the M10 flywheel? Are the M30 boxes' input shaft the same spline as a M10. I need an uprated clutch/cover anyway, but wouldn't want to buy that twice...

Yeah Erik from bavaria cars has the M30 gearbox in his 2002 but you have to basically rebuild the tranny tunnel as it wont fit.

Yes, the spline is same. I would not use m30 flywheel and clutch because they are so heavy. I have used m10 flywheel with 228mm sintered copper disc and now I have 7,25" racing clutch on modified m10 flywheel. Also you can't fit m30 clutch with m10 gearbox as it won't fit inside the bellhousing.

What if you are considering buying an automatic car with the intention to swap to an s14 trans? I think I remember reading that the tunnel is larger in the auto cars....is this true??

Not exactly the same HP, but I can say the same about the 242 in my race car!

And a turbo's not particularly hard on the weak gears (1st especially)

because by the time you're in boost, you're in 2nd.

Now, that's certainly not true of a CR box...
