I found this car advertised in the Washington Post yesterday. Anyone know about it?

My notes:

1) Nose replaced with snorkel one (horrible welding on passenger side)

2) Driver's seat needs some work

3) BMW color sticker suspiciously covered in black tape

4) Missing air cleaner to throttle body boot (how simple would that be to replace)

5) Weird plug wires

6) Lots of aluminum spray paint on intake and valve cover

7) Very old plastic fuel lines from KF pump and mis-routing of fuel line to cold start valve

8) Unusual reflectors applied to lower rear bumper

9) No VIN number listed

10) Woodgrain dash cluster (74+)

11) No aluminum trim on door panels (or are they painted black)

12) Steering wheel has multiple cracks

13) Hood rod painted body color

14) Manual, tool kit, jack, original wheels come with car??

15) Aluminum front grills missing black covers.

This is at least the second time it's been on eBay. You seam to have found all the things that are really wrong with the car. I also notice that the hood hold down bar and hardware (windshield squirters too) are painted. Thats allong with the wrinkled inner right fender and missing airfilter bellows, are BIG signs of a crappy car. Especially at the price they are asking.

Was it Inka? Look down by the seat and parking brake. (EDIT: That's the seat belt receiver.)

That's the kind of car you find bondo and window screen in.

Does look nice in it's non original color and wheels tho.

It's a super cool looking car in many ways, but if THAT'S what a $24K 2002 looks like - I'm gonna ask $48K for Miss Emily! (jus' funnin' Y'all)

Seriously - this makes me feel like less of a schmuck, about my current asking price for my own car.

I'd never seen Tiaga w. Panasport/ MiniLite type wheels - it IS a great combo!

I like the color combo - but just not for that price. Did I have the color spelled wrong?

Gotta wonder what the underside (and spare tire well) looks like.

Paul - any luck on selling Emily?

Not much interest yet, but between the asking price and my own laziness in advertising her, I'm not surprised.

With the mods on her, she's not really gonna bring top dollar at a collector car auction. (Those folks are usually after original equipment cars) It'll take a real freak/obsessive 2002 geek to appreciate much of the build details.

  • 8 months later...

I inquired about this car over the weekend - price has been dropped to $19.9k. Even with it's non-original color and suspect repairs it's still a great looking car. The salesman informed me that they had the Kugelfischer pump rebuilt with the receipts to back it up.

What do you think a reasonable offer would be?

NOt anywhere 19K that's for sure. I wish I could be more constructive but with the above noted problems it will always be what it is, a tii with the wrong color and a lot of really suspect repairs going on. I mean.... these are just what we are seeing from pictures on the net. Who knows what's lurking under that green paint. I'd rather cough up the dough for that nice Malaga on Hemmings for 22.5K. At least that car looks honest to begin with.

Buy this, fly out and drive it back. You'll still be ahead compared to the Taiga turd.
