Look what I found this weekend

Brand new never used e12 head, cast in 1984 as a replacement part for our cars. So shinny and clean.

How rare are these to find?

What would be the value of one of these? (did I get a deal at $250)

you didn't 'steal' it, but i think you received good value for your money

i'm guessing you saved yourself about $300-400 in machining work to make a used head to be as new-ish as yours.

you deserve to 'gloat' a little....

you suck ;)

Yup, that's a good deal.

It's $500 of machining.

Plus, you can be pretty sure it's

in good shape, which is more than you

can say for most of the junk that's out

there these days.

I really hope that everyone that is picking up the really inexpensive E12 heads is getting a good deal. I picked up an E12 a couple of years ago - looked nice, was pretty cheap (I think I paid 150). Took it to a machine shop to have new valve guides pressed, valve seats machined, cleaned, etc... - the first thing the machinist said (I hadn't even taken the thing out of the trunk) - "It's warped". WTF! I went over this thing with my metal square a bunch, looked true to me. But - he showed me some minute grooves in the camshaft journal area, and that meant warpage. Here's the statement from my quote:

Note: The cylinder head is warped by 0.10 mm and will require straightening/resurfacing.

The pressure test shows no leakage or cracks. All guides will need replacement and all

seats will require remachining. The cam journals will return to proper alignment during the

straightening process but will need machining.

The moral? Just be careful with those "great deals" out there guys.

PS - here's a pic from when the mechanic/machinist laid out all of my parts for assembly after the machine work.
