Replacing the heater valve without removing the heater box?

I've noticed that the heater valve on my 1974 tii has started to leak. I've purchased a new valve,

damn i was looking at parts last night and that f-ing valve is $300!!! is there any way to "maintain" our current ancient valves to perhaps extend their lives a little longer - greasing the cable or the moving part on the valve or something? mine works but it doesn't move as smooth as i'd like. not really sure what a "new" one is supposed to feel like.
