Tii VIN Number Thread

Here are some of the cars I have inspected when I was looking for another tii:

 

chamonix (possibly originally Ceylon) 72tii 2761475  (Southern Maryland),  5 speed CR trans, no notch in firewall, fixed roof, plastic runners, Repa seatbelts, Clardy A/C

 

tundra 72tii 2760240 (Pennsylvania)  4-speed, fixed roof, plastic runners, no notch in firewall, aftermarket seats.  Car needed body and paint work.  I really wanted to buy this one.

 

tundra 72tii 2760543 (VA),  121 cylinder head stamped November 1971, no notch in firewall, 4-speed, sunroof, all injection components removed (single Weber carb). Lots of rust.

 

Almost forgot about this one:

Colorado 72tii 2762557 (MD)  Aluminum runners, notch in firewall, very rusty.

Just bought 73 RHD 2751597 to restore. VIN search from the Spanish site only shows general info. Is there a way to dig more history about chassis numbers?

I am a bit behind... back to Feb 15 posts by Jim G 2760617 and Tomphot 2760698 - both produced on Jan 18.

We are currently restoring 2760696 - Inka, no sunroof.  

Info from BMW gives production date as Jan 19.

May have missed this.  Are there other examples of vins having production dates being later in comparison to higher numbers?

I don't know for certain.  Every once in a while I see a date that doesn't quite fit the usual progression -- e.g., it's off by a couple weeks from what I might expect -- but I usually assume the poster accidentally copied the title delivery date in lieu of the manufacturing date (this is why I like to see a cut-and-paste of the full reply from BMW Archives).  Yours is different:  it's SO close to Tom's (tomphot's) car that I might suspect your car had some minor issue that prevented a final sign-off on January 18th -- e.g., missing part, paint run, defective part -- and that issue was corrected the next day.

The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2760007 was manufactured on October 20th, 1971 and delivered on November 8th, 1971 to Hoffman Motors. The original colour was Colorado, paint code 002.

My car is vin number 2763669 it is the 39th 1973 2002tii produced. It was assembled Oct 23, 1972. So they must have started assembly of 1973 model year about that date, depending on how many a day were produced. Ceylon, slick top beater, still working for a living.

#2760841.  72 Agave. Purchased by my father from a salvage yard in 1989. Someone punched it in the nose. It sat in barn until 2013 when I acquired it.  It became known as the "Batmobile" because of the thick layer of Bat Guano over the entire car.

 

Currently being completely restored to original specs with all original power train.  Parts by Bluntech.  Bodywork by ISS Werks (Larry Schmidt) and engine and suspension by no less than Jenny Morgan.  This one was literally saved from the scrap yard.

My VIN cheat sheet is showing:

 

2762632 = October 7, 1972

2762639 = October 10, 1972

2762643 = October 10, 1972

2762757 = October 19, 1972

2762950 = November 2, 1972

etc.

The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2762757 was manufactured on October 19th, 1972 and delivered on October 24th, 1972 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Inka, paint code 022.

This, oddly, places my 2762757 four days before your 2762669, well out of sequence.

I was just going from memory maybe I am wrong, but the first 1973 car was 2763630,so if they made 2757 on Oct 24, 72 they would have had to make almost 900 more cars befor starting 1973 model year? Did they start model year and Calendar year at the same time. I will check on the old email from mobile traditions.

For my 2762757, October 19th is the manufacturing date, October 24th is simply the date when legal title was delivered/transferred from BMW to Hoffman Motors Corp.  I'm thinking that the October 23rd date you quoted for your 2762669 was the date when legal title was delivered/transferred to Hoffman Motors (the manufacturing date would have been earlier).

 

U.S. model years generally began in September and ended in July -- the factory was closed for most of August.
