This looks like my friend's old car.  Did you buy it from a guy in Texas?  If you did he purchased from a friend of mine at Oktoberfest 2018..

Yes Mike, I think so-  your friend Is Rick, correct?

I emailed him prior to buying the car and he was very helpful and  made me more confident in  my first long distance purchase.

Yes.  Rick took great care of that tii.  You got a good car.  I was shocked when he sold it.  I thought I had talked him into returning it to its original color.  I even gave him 4 stock tii wheels to put back on it.  I hope you will enjoy it for a long time.

I can say it is rock solid from all indications thus far.

I have some things to sort out yet like the blower motor and the drivers seat is ripped and worn, and general drivability stuff.  The guy Rick sold it to in Texas put AC in it immediately, it works great but evidently they did it without checking the blower motor!    I just finished refreshing the Shifter snd it is a joy to drive now.

The paint is still good for the most part. Rick told me he got that way in the early 80’s so I assume the Fjord metallic failed Quickly and they just went to white.  I want to get an estimate on getting it back to blue, but sticker shock may settle that question for me.

I talked (email) to Rick about the wheels - the guy I got it from removed whatever he could so I didn’t get them, the cover, or coco mats with it ( though the cover and mats were in the pre purchase  photos !)  I’d like to get the correct alloys, but those are very hard to find!

Anyway, I guess you can tell I like this car!  It is really helping weather the pandemic, as I get to tinker with some things and drive it often!

Got my note from the source:

The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2763751 was manufactured on April 9th, 1973 and delivered on April 17th, 1973 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Malaga, paint code 021.

Hasn't changed much...

Bruce,

The earliest U.S.-spec tii with an E12 head is VIN 2761944 (early June 1972). Euro-spec tii’s and carbed cars were all being converted to E12 heads during the spring and summer of 1972, on various schedules, with interruptions along the way. I don’t believe I’ve seen an E12 head dated before April 1972, but I have no real idea when E12 head production actually started. Given that they were moving all ‘02 production from 121 to E12, I’d guess they needed to crank up production ahead of time — maybe not, maybe they could produce heads at the same pace as cars!

(Recall that VIN’s 2762015 through 2762372 reverted to 121 heads, before, once again, resuming E12 heads with VIN 2762373.)

Best regards,

Steve

Re 2760341, at some point my car and that engine were in together in Petaluma, right next to Penngrove. So I wonder if that was the common ownership?  The clutch components in my car are dated 1999, so I'm guessing that when this engine was installed in it.
