Dutch 2002 L is going M42

We started a new fun project.

After finishing restoration of both jeffrey’s and my Tii Touring in 2006 for the Bavaria Tour we needed a fun car to join the others on the circuit without damaging our beautiful Tourings.

We thought about a tuned M10, M20 or….. M42. The last one it is. Not the easiest choice but still a lot of fun we hope.

The car for the project was found sitting in its garage for the last 16 years. It went in with just a leaking water pump and beside some minor spots it looked rather solid.

We got the brakes going and took her home on a trailer. Back home after replacing de water pump it took just about half an hour before the engine was running again and beside a leaking exhaust it sounded all OK.

We drove it around last year and found a cheap M42 engine by the end of 2008.

Yesterday we started on the engine mounts which went rather well. We now have a set almost ready and will start next week on the battery mount for the trunk and start taking out the M10.

If you guys have any tips or questions on what we come across, just ask.

Will keep you informed on our progress in this blog.

Thanks Mike, I think this is going to be a fun project to do.

Would very much like to come over, only can’t make it this year.

Hope next year it is going to be less busy in that period.

The 02 lost its M10 last Saturday, engine mounts now are both finished and the engine bay has been cleaned.

Last week Jeffrey and I managed to get the M42 engine and trans in and make a new trans support bracket. We also put in a new shifter comming from an E36 which fits better than the E30 due to its length.

Friday another friend Rob joined us to help shortening the drive shaft and make another one for his Tii in which he's planting a 5 speed trans.

For now we're struggling with the centre steering rod. The E28 version doesn't fit the steering lever of the 02, but i'm sure we'll fix that in the next week or so.

Hi André,

Yes just the weight. Less weight, quicker responding.

I'll make you a list of items you'll need.

So we altered the steering lever to fit the E28 centre steering rod and shortened the outer steering rod’s.

Also the heater radiator has been cleaned and the unit reassembled with another el. motor.

Jeffrey finished the battery mount for the trunk and I put in the second fuel line and battery cable to the trunk.

well i have a few questions for you as i am in the middle of this swap right now!....

first and foremost, the steering. what all are you doing with the e28 steering and what else is being done in this area? is it because its necessary for this swap or is it because you just want to upgrade?

secondly, your using the m10 clutch and flywheel for wieght correct? are you using a different transmission or are you using the 5-speed from the m42? if so did you have to do any modifications to use the flywheel and clutch or do they just go right in?

finally, i was wondering if there was a chance that you could make/sell me a few of the items you have fabbed up for this? is there any way you could make and sell me both the motor mounts and the trans crossmember? if so just let me know and let me know a price!

my email is kevin_s_08@hotmail.com if you could email me your responses! all help will be GREATLY appreciated!
