If I am not mistaken, those are production numbers and not model numbers.

there are no tables that I know of (in BMW

tech lit) that decodes that number

early = 232/6 4-speed w/ Porsche baulk-ring sycromesh

later = 242/6 4-speed w/ Borg Warner baulk-ring sycromesh

1502 = standard gearbox 242/14

235/5 = 5-speed w/ Porsche sycromesh

(( my 1976 2002 had gearbox Ser# 483017/6

production date 1976 ))

look closely - you may see the serial numbers to

the Porsche sycro early 02 gearbox, the

later GETRAG 02 box, and the 5-spd GETRAG 320i box

look in the clutch bell housing and you'll see a cast-in

clock like mark showing the MONTH/YEAR production date
