Embossed trim on the front of the hood

I think this is one of th0se unanswered questions but here goes...

When was the embossed trim strip last used at the front edge of the hood?

If anyone is keeping a list to nail the date down, I have just acquired VIN 1662147 and it has the embossed trim strip- not sure it's original but it would appear to be. Having read the words about mixing and matching parts from the same bin at the factory, this may be an impossible quest anyway

year 68 car (approx changeover to first series '69 was ca 1662848 +/-). The factory parts book, IIRC, doesn't even show the embossed hood trim as a separate part number so the book isn't much help.

I have some road tests from when the '02 first came out, and they are mostly of the same car, based on the NJ mfg license plate. It's a Polaris '02 and is a very early one. Tests were published in April '68 when the '02 was introduced to the US market so had to be done no later than January 68 for press scheduling. The pictured car has embossed hood trim.

As for your car with a late '68 VIN, I'd be kinda surprised if that hood trim was original, but it may well be--a stray piece in the parts bin at the factory--it could happen, or that's what was in the dealer's parts bin when the original owner dented his hood trim and needed a new one. Years ago I parted out 1660900 and it didn't have the embossed trim; if it had I woulda grabbed it.

Ben--your car is 1661250; does it have embossed trim? Anyone else with an early car--1600 or 2002 with embossed trim--speak up and we'll try to do some charting.

cheers

Email to Andreas Harz last night about the car received this reply this morning:

"The BMW 2002 US VIN 1662147 was manufactured on July 9th, 1968 and delivered on July 10th, 1968 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Manila, paint code 004."

I also asked about the use of embossed trim, but the answer was: "Regarding the blanket insulator mats I will ask our technical experts. I contact you as soon as possible." I'll ask again using the part number of the non-embossed part.

I'm told my car had the trim, but it was replaced by the PO when a new full beltline trim kit was fitted in 2005.

I was able to acquire a candidate for restoration last year--I sent it to a high end trim specialist who said it really wasn't worth fixing--I actually never paid him anything to ship it back, so, I guess I no longer have an embossed example to share. :(

I wonder if some clever soul could make up a die to hand -punch the embossing marks...all they'd need is an example to see what the embossed section looked like, and to count the number of embossed spots on the trim piece and the spacing between.

picture of embossed trim from 1600-2 road test in February 1967 Car and Driver.

This picture is actually of a 1966 1600-2. which had the embossed trim but with the embossed sections painted flat black (you can barely tell in the old photo, but its black), both front and rear. Tom Jones' 66 still has the rear trim in black. My early 67 has the ebossed trim but no black paint. I have a road test of a 68 2002 and 68 1600 from early 68 and both have embossed trim but I think they were euro cars brought over for testing by journalists. I don't think many 2002's ever came with embossed trim, perhaps just a few of the earliest ones. Same with 1600's, I think early 68 was the cutoff. The April 68 1600 I'm just selling now did not have the embossed trim. I seriously doubt the late 68 in question here had that originally. I bet it was what the dealer had in stock when a previous owner replaced it.

What I found particularly interesting about the above link, a single post by calw, is that his mid-'68 2002's hood trim had the inset sections but there is none of the "dotted" texture I normally associate with the embossed hood trim. So were there 3 successive styles of front hood trim, e.g., (1.) embossed with texture, (2.) embossed without texture, and (3.) not embossed? Or does calw's embossed-without-texture represent a (rare) example of "2002 embossing" -- as opposed to "1600-2 embossing"? (Or were there aftermarket suppliers of replacement hood trim who simply ignored the texture to reduce costs?)
