1600 vs. 1602: History Question

Just wondering what early US spec 1600s were badged first off the boat and if they ever officially arrived with rear 1602 badges during the "1600" US lifespan? When is a 1600 a 1602 and vice versa?

The 1602 was never badged that way in the US. All were 1600s. Be sure you are looking up the correct 1600 badge as they are narrower and mounted above the taillight for '67 production. Some very early '68 1600s (156xxxx) still had the badges above the taillight too. The earliest 2 door 1600s had the BMW16oo badge above the taillight.

Sometime in early '68 production the 1600s had their badges widened to the same width as 2002s and the badges were placed in the "normal" spot between the license plate and right taillight.

I can take a picture with both badges in it if you need....

Thanks Tom, The reason I ask is that most online parts houses usually list both models and the parts are not always the same for each.

Even with Real OEM or Max's site, if you select "1600" there is no USA Region listed. You must select "1602" for the USA Region to populate.

I'm considering the purchase of a 1600 and this issue popped up whilst looking up replacement brake part numbers, I thought this was strange.

Tom buddy, I have to correct you The small batch of 1971 (final year in the US) 1600's carried the "1602" badge. I read this in one of my BMW books and I've seen one for sale before but there were so few sold vs. the 2002 you hardly see them for resale.

US 1600s that were built for the US before the factory pulled the plug on 1600 sales in the US? I don't think I've ever seen one--this would be a 1600 with the lower side rub strips, rubber on the front and rear bumpers, black-faced instruments (no silver centers), etc.

If you check the parts book for VINs, you'll see that a very small number of these cars were built...

Your car is a US car, an early 67. All 67's were euro-spec except for the speedometer in MPH. You probably have stickers in German too right? Your VIN is just a bit before mine, #1517644 (March 67). Congrats you have one of the oldest running (assuming it is) 1600's in the US! Keep it as original as you can, they don't come much rarer than early 67's are. We should meet up and compare cars. Mike, you are correct, I was referring to that limited batch of 71s.
