Need a new starter...Which one and Why?

I hear about M3 starters, 7 series, 3 series...which starter should I use and why? Is there any advantages to the M3? I know its lighter, how is the power, durability? basically I wanna know why I should use one starter over another and which one will be best for my 2002....Thx.

"M3" starter. Lighter and more torque, especially advantageous on tii and other high compression engines. If you do a search on this site, you will find that this issue has been discussed numerous times.

Just installed a rebuilt M3 starter from Advance Auto Parts. Got it online for $139 + $40 core charge.

whats the number on the one you got? sr440x or sr441x??

id like to confirm a rumor. i believe there to be 2 versions. one is 1.0kw torque and one is 1.4kw of torque.

I checked the starter, faintly below the part number and the 12V designation on the starter there appears to be a 14 just before it says Germany. To faint or painted over to make a picture.

style starter and not the new versions which look the same as the SR 440X dimensionally and even come with a sticker on them from Bosch stating that even though the starter does not look like the original it is the correct replacement. I also wonder if the power figure for the starter has changed as well.

Hi Sherman,

I assume that is correct. I have an old-style starter at home and will weigh it to see. Good to know if I order a 2002 starter I might end up with the new-style thinner/lighter one. But since higher cranking power is what I will need with the (future) high compression engine, I will need to find out the specs for the new version 2002 starter.

BTW, the 4.44 gearset is installed, but have not had it on the track yet. Will test it out this weekend.

I just got off the phone with Bosch tech support, they say there is no new version of the SR 71X. According to Bosch, the SR 71X still weighs 17 lbs and has an output of 0.95 kW. Does that new version you received say SR 71X on it? If so, we have a new mystery. Are there any other part codes on it we can use to determine which Bosch starter it is?

I asked about the weight of the SR 440X, Bosch says it is 10 lbs, not 12 lbs as I had found on a retailer site (above). The tech did verify the 1.4 kW output for the SR 440X

The tech was not able to tell me if the SR 441X will fit the M10 block. Even if it bolts up, the starter gear may not extend the same distance as the SR 71x/440X. We'll have find a SR 441X and try it out. The tech did verify the 1.7 kW output for the SR 441X

Finally, I did verify that the F5000 codes I quoted above are indeed Bosch part numbers.
