Hello all. Ive been lurking on this site for a little under a year, and have found tons of great info. Im a little ignorant when it comes to 02's, so pardon me if the following question is a dumb one.

Anyhow, I recently purchased a 71 1602 and am in need of a new starter, tried searching for info specific to my engine, with no luck. My question is: can I use any of the 2002 starters mentioned in the "Need a new starter...Which one and why" thread?

I checked bap geon and compared part numbers for 2002's and 1602's, and noticed they didnt share the same part #'s, so I want to make sure before I purchase the wrong starter. TIA!

*started a new thread because I didnt see the original thread bumped to the top. highlight,

Welcome!

I think all starters from a 2002 would be fine. I discovered that when you look up parts for a 1600, it really wants you to put in 1602 or you end up with no results because it thinks you are a Euro model.

BTW, what is your VIN number?

Try www.realoem.com

Your local auto parts store should be able to get you one to save shipping costs.

Your front bumper looks to be from a 72-73 model year car, you can tell because of the rubber bump strips on the corners. I'm curious to hear what your VIN shows up, as I didn't think 1602's were produced as late as 1970, unless perhaps yours came over from Europe or something.

According to the VIN table it was made Im guessing late 1970? 1695 made that year for the US.

About the bumper, I guess I've just never seen the bar atop. Im guessing its for fogs?

I just tried to order the SR440X starter from Bap Geon, and the guy refused to order saying it wouldn't fit.

Stuff your vin in here:

and have a look. U can cross reference 2002 and 1600 starters also. Actually a E30 M3 (S14) starter is a good upgrade for a 2002. I think it should fit a 1600. All are M10 blocks.

Cheers,

Congrats on your new 1602. The 71 1602 is very rare, they only made like 200-250 or so for the US that were labeled "1602". It was the final hurrah for the 1600 in the USA. Yes, you can use a 2002 starter, its the same thing. Most parts are the same aside from the motor's head and the pistons/crank etc in side the motor since the block is smaller and the head has smaller inlet and exhaust ports.

The starter is simple to remove and replace with minimal effort and tools. You can also take it to a machine shop that repairs starters and have it rebuilt for less than $100 in most cases. I had mine done a year ago because it's 6V and not available over the counter, but I found its cheaper to have it rebuilt than buy it refurbished or new.

Yes, the 2002 starter will work. It is a little larger compared the 1600 -1602 starter, but it fits. It really works well because the 1.6L rotating engine components are lighter, and your engine will spin very nice when starting.

Your 1602 has more parts in common with the 2002 than earlier 1600-2s. But, not all the parts are the same (mainly internal engine components and clutch parts in your case ). For hat year 1602, you should have the same driveline aft of te engine as the 2002 except that your diff is geared 4.10 vs. 3.64 for the 2002. Your front brakes are the same as the 2002, but your rear drums are probably the smaller 200mm drums compared to the 230mm drums from the 2002. Your clutch linkage should be hydraulic actuated, but most 1600s have the mechanical clutch. Your flywheel, clutch disk and pressure plate are unique to the 1600. These are some of the diffrences. There are more.
