Where can I find 13" tires other than Sumitomo, Falken,

Thanks guys for the help. It seems like there are more 185/70's available than 185/60's. What is recommended? I have BMW OEM 5.5x13 alloys and the car is slightly lowered.

185/70-13 are recommended.

I recently got the Sumitomos from TireRack and think they are very decent tires for the money.

FYI Original tire/wheel combo diameter on our cars was 23.4". A 185/70 x 13 has a diameter of 23.2" A 185/60 x 13 is only 21.74" Therefore, to maintain original suspension geometry, speedo ratio, etc. it closest to stay, as mentioned above, with 185/70 x 13.

I looked for different 13" tires for about a week. Couldnt find much, so I ended up going with the Sumitomo's. They are decent tires for the money. I run 205/60's, so I was even more limited. I considered going with the 185/65's or 70's, but other than Kumho's there wasnt much out there. I hate Kumho's (although their R-comps are good), so I just went with what I'd run in the past.

try Ebay. I scored a foursome of Yokos 185/70 for about forty dollars each a few months ago. the seller was Discount Tire Online.

and free delivery to boot.

couldn't really beat the deal.

good luck with your hunt, they're definitely getting harder to find.

  • 5 months later...

just for size reference on common tires seen on 02's...

effective sidewall heights in mm (normalized to a 13in wheel)

165/80 132

175/70 122.5

185/60 111

185/70 129.5

195/60 117.6

205/60 123

195/60 14 129.5

195/65 14 139.5

195/50 15 122.9

195/55 15 132.7

205/50 15 127.9

tiny tires like the 185/60 are a poors man's way of changing the final drive ratio for acceleration....like putting a 4.44 diff in the back. conversely, the monster truck tires like the 195/65 14 lower the final drive ratio. both screw with the speedo reading.

I am mostly interested in performance from some new 185/70 13s - bummed I can't find T4s.

Which are better in your collective experience? Sumitomos or Avid Touring Yokis?

how do you define performance? if it is ultimate grip, then the avid's ain't it. they are an all (no)season tire. sumi makes an htr200 that is a summer performance tire. i have the older htr100's on my 73 in 195/60 13 and they were great street tires.

the 195/60 is actually shorter than the 185/70 and only a little bit wider. should have less issues. my 73 was lowered on h&r sport springs and had no issues. check the space between your front strut and your current tire. the 195 will be 5mm closer.

note...i would not put them on wheels less than 5.5 in wide. and since they are a little shorter, there will be less tire in the wheel well so the car will look like it is riding a little higher, even though it is really about 1cm lower.

with your def of performance, stay away from any tire that says "all season" on it. stick with summer performance models. you will be happy..
