Greetings. Just purchased a 1974 2002 and 196? 1600. The '74 is complete and rust free. The 1600 was stripped to restore and the shell prepared ready to paint. All the parts are there and judging by the condition of the seats was in good condition. Yet to pick up the engine and most the parts so I will concentrate on the '74 to start.

I have just finished a E21 to 2.7i Motronic conversion using 11:1 CR eta block mated with a 325i 885 head. Very impressive torque and power.

Now time to concentrate on the 2002 and 1600. With the purchase I also grabbed an old 1978 E21 316. It has an M10 with E12 head. The '74 also has an E12 head.

From what I have researched so far the E12 heads off the E21 320i and Tii 2002 have larger valves and are the ones to look for?

I was considering an EFI upgrade as E30 318i's are easy and cheap to procure and the head should mate up..any suggestions/comments?

Before I strip out the E21 are there many parts that can be used on the 2002 or 1600?

That's a lot to cover!

Am I understanding correctly that you have the M20 motor in the `74? Whatever you have it in, you should post pictures!

There are many people, including myself, on this board that are in various stages of adding EFI using E30 318i manifolds. To answer your question there, use the 318i's intake manifold; not the head. See www.finkbuilt.com for a cursory introduction to that EFI conversion.

Also, yes, the E12 heads have larger valves and (I think) make use of the piano top pistons to make 9.5:1 compression.

Otherwise, pull the radiator, alternator, rear brakes and the drivetrain.

Post pictures of your projects!

Good luck.

2.7 eta engine in an E21 - considerably easier conversion than plugging the same engine into an '02, as E21 320/6 & 323 models came from BMW with M20 engines from the factory. With the correct 6 cylinder front crossmember, motor mount pylons and an M20 bellhousing trans, it's essentially a bolt-in.
