Who makes a good set of plug wires.

There are many vendors who sell these Kingsborne wires as their own 8mm sets. I like their sets because they use very high quality OEM Beru ends with nice 8mm wire. These are what I use on my red 1600.

Our normal suppliers sell these Karlyn wire sets. This is what I sell our customers, and what I have on all the rest of my cars.

Very good reading as to why you do not want Mag core wires in general and especially on a modern super electronic car. The wires they are talkin' about are http://www.magnecor.com .

If you've gotta have those race red ground strap super duper racy lookin' wires than Nology is the way to go. Many of our Porsche customers swear by them.

The difference between early and late 2002 spark plug wire sets is the length of the coil wire. The late ones have a much longer coil wire, the coil is mounted up where the washer bottle normally resides in the front corner.

I had horrible luck with Bosch wires falling apart on me about 5 years

ago, and discovered that if you buy a 'partially finished'

wire set for an early AMC, you get enough to make 2 sets of wires for about

$60. I've been using the Accel 8.8mm stuff, and it holds up well

in both the street cars and on the race car.

I still always carry a spare wire, though, after having several experiences

over the years with wires dying/coming apart.

In fact, I think I've had more failed spark plug wires than I've had flat tires.

fwiw.

Norm,

on the BF E21 forum someone had purchased a "make your own" wires kit for a V8 engine with magneto, from Summit (I think), for $69. He make a set for his M10 and sold the other. These are solid core racing wires.

They might have been made by Accel but I can't be for sure.

Are any of you checking the resistance of your plug wires? Isn't performance an issue over price when we may be paying more money for a less functional product?

First set I tried were the Bav Auto wires. The spark plug boots didn't fit down into the head right though, and I struggled with them.

Switched to the Ireland wires. Love them.

same here, the long black boots actually slide off the red cable, never mind being next to impossible to get over the plug. I cut about 1" of the boots off. I just replaced them w/ a set of Karlyn wires (from BLUNT) which seem OK. Not fancy looking, but functional, and easy to connect/disconnect. I like them.

****** up-date****** After running these wires for maybe 700 miles total, 500 miles on my last trip to Lime Rock & back, 1 wire failed on me. Well, I shouldn't say "failed" but more like, I burned out the internal resistor, according to Karlyn. These wires are NOT FOR MSD boxes, or the like. They have internal resistors, just like the bosch. The coil wire also has higher resistance than the Bav Auto, and would guess other similar wires.

I have gone back to the Bav Auto wires.

Here is Karlyn's remarks to my email: "...we do not recommend our wire sets to be used with an MSD box. Our wire sets come with an internal resistor in the OE type spark plug connector. An MSD box can blow these resistors out which is why MSD doesn't use OE type construction for their wire sets."
