I added another plug when I rewired the72. Had the same problem you are having. I'd suggest that you replace the original with a modern (uncorroded) version. If you pull yours and look at it you will more than likely see corroded eroded terminals which when the GPS or phone does draw power would not make them happy.

A simple no cost solution is to wrap narrow athletic tape around the plug your inserting in the cigarette lighter. I put one or two layers on the tip and another on the other side of the expanding clip that holds it tight in most standard size cigarette lighters.

I've found GPS systems are great for rallys indicating roads and road names up ahead long before you get a visual.
