New Project...69' Sahara: anything special about the 1969's?

OK, Thanks to you guys for helping me with the 75'! All your help was very important and I'm grateful for this community.

Just bought a 1969, is there anything specific about 1969's that is unique? Here's what I know:

PO says the tranny and clutch are tired

Bilstein Sport or HD shocks don't remember which

urethane bushings, tight steering

Rust: front fenders where under A pillars, bottom of doors, bottom of rear quarters.

Body work needed: passenger side rear quarter crumpled, grill bent

Sunroof works great, no leaks.

Floor pan is not rusted

Short block needs freshening(he says lots of blow-by and uses a quart of oil every month. This is based on him commuting 40 miles daily in Seattle traffic)

Head (161) was recently redone.

Has Weber 32/36 DGV.

Needs ign. switch, simple wiring attention and battery.

Has console and insert for DIN stereo.

Stock seats are there, but need recovering.

Most interior carpet needs replacing.

All glass is good, windshield has crescent ding that could stand repair, but hasn't showed signs of spreading. No other glass damage (and it matches). Car is very nearly complete and stock

Everything else is normal for a 40 year old car. These pictures are from when the PO bought it. He got it from a 2002 guy in Northern Washington.

Paging Mike Self!! He is eminently qualified to answer your Q's. He has owned his '69 Nevada since new. He has worked on just about every part of it too. A very nice stock roundie he has.

Post the VIN and I can give you a lot more details--there were two variants of US '69s--those built before 1 Jan 69 and those built after (breakoff VIN is 1664760). There are significant differences between the two.

Per my sales literature and ordering info, Sahara wasn't an available color on US '69s...so if the color is original and the car is in fact a '69, it may have been a tourist or military delivery in Germany. Mobile Tradition can tell you that.

If your VIN is before 1665200, you have the six bolt flywheel, coil spring pressure plate and early throwout bearing. Also, the clutch pedal return spring assy is different and has a very wear-prone horseshoe-shaped link.

Anyway, lemme know what info you seek, and I'll try to help.

cheers from a long-time '69 owner...

is about the same distance on the "series I" side of the 1664760 divide as Mike Self's car is on the Series II side - if you have an early car and need info, I'll help anywhere I can.

Among the easily identifiable "markers" of a series I car (in addition to the info Mike provided) are 2 piston, single circuit front calipers, long neck diff, and grilles with black painted slats (as opposed to black anodized slat covers).

In addition, it appears that somewhere toward the end of the run of series I cars, BMW made a running change from half shafts with u-joints on one end and CV joints on the other to CV joints at both ends - my car came with the later halfshafts and diff flanges drilled for both.

OK....The PO says it's a series 2 (6560), which it probably is, but I can't find 1666560 as a legit VIN. The car is still up in Seattle, have not seen it, so I'm waiting for the PO to double check the VIN.
