want to buy a lift - advice?

Recommended Posts

I want a lift. I'm sick of laying on the ground, and I'm sick of jack stands.

Problem is - I can't get a 4 post or 2 post lift. Don't have room. I'm thinking a portable scissor lift.

Something like this:

Which I can also find on E-bay.

Or this:

Thoughts or suggestions? I hope to have the money to do this by March.

Thanks for the replies John.

I wish I could fit something like the MaxJax.

Unfortunately - the garage looks like this:

or, in other words - really really full.

I think that's why I'm leaning toward a scissor jack - I can store it under a car.

Personally, that particular type of scissor lift scares me. A few of my hot-rod buddies have KwikLifts and swear by them.

Although you're still laying on the ground, everything is stable, as the car remains on its wheels. Plus, they store, although most people simply leave them in place and simply park on them.

My brother has two Backyard Buddies in his custom garage in Greenwich, Conn. My brother is a rich, pompous, obnoxious asshole with a vintage Porsche collection, with many Concours trophies. We don't speak, my brother and me. But according to my sister (who still speaks to him), the lifts are nice, and she says that he says that Backyard Buddies are the best in the business.

Finally, I'm building a garage. Here's what I plan to do. After I rob a bank, that is. Not my thread, of course - just something I ran across while surfing about in The Garage Journal.

I'll have to remember that.

OK - I think I see what Otis is talking about with the other lift, and possible stability issues.

So - now I'm thinking about this one:

And for storage, I'll just park the 02 on top of it...

Thanks for the replies John.

Unfortunately - the garage looks like this:

YOur problem is that you mistakenly think that a garage is for parking and storing cars, where they are really for taking cars apart and therefore not having room in which to keep them. If you come around to this correct way of thinking you can get the lift you desire.

Actually - I firmly believe that a garage is for taking cars apart, and for parts storage.

It's my wife that firmly believes that her car must live inside.

I don't think it's because she cares all that much about her car. I think it's because she knows if she vacates the space, I'll get another car to fill it.

Hi Ken,

Do you have the room in your yard for a hoophouse. They are really cheap to make and you can build it in a day.

You can also build them for permanent if needed. I had to put one up for temporary car storage once.

You can make it as elaborate as you want. Won't have to get a permit as it is a movable item. (States vary)

Now I replaced the covering with greenhouse material and us it for a greenhouse.

It could keep the wife happy also.

Otis,

Real nice solution to the lift problem & thanks for the link.

That's really cool. I would build one if I had the room, or if my Home Owner's Association wouldn't have a cow.

Unfortunately - both of those are problems....

I appreciate all of the input. I'll report back if I come up with any brilliant ideas.

I'm blessed to have a real shop (finally) and space for a real two-post lift and there is no going back.

It's amazing to be able to stand up and have oil drip on your face :-)
