Do I drive an "E6" ?

Jerzy recently posted a link to an interesting site that raises something I have wondered about for a long time and I thought deserved a separate thread.

This site has 100s of photos. Sections devoted to M and Alpina cars.

On the page explaining "E,F and M symbols." It uses an "E6" designation for 1502 -2002ti/tii. I have seen this designation used before along with the "114 platform" but wondered why it seemed disfavored. Realoem certainly makes no mention of it, nor do the manuals and other reference works I have looked at. They do reference "114." Maybe I slept in school the day they taught "E6"

I also notice the "E20" designation for what is pictured as a 74 turbo and what is probably an owner modified 02/1600 with the license plate "MPOWER" (probably someone on this board). The sidebar says the E20 is "a version of the E6." "M2", I understand. "E20" leaves me confused.

Then, it notes E9's were produced from 1965 onward. I don't think so, unless they are including prototypes or designer's dreams and a 2000CS which may have been introduced in 1964 and seems more like an "E6" to me. Maybe they meant 1968.

While I am on the subject of trivia, I recall recently hearing someone say they owned an "E10." I asked if the speaker meant M10 and he corrected me claiming he was referring to a specific turbo model. Using this twisted logic, maybe he was referring to a turbo model running .5 the boost normally run in the E20! (If PatA gets by with 25 lb/in2 of boost, maybe he needs to reregister his car as an E225?)

This is as far as I went with the facts and moved on to the pictures.

I will now return to eating my candy bar with a knife and fork.

Other sources refer to "E6" and "E10" and "E20" - but they do not explain why these numbers are less popular or why even the factory shop manual and parts manual (as far as I have noticed) neglect to not use the designations or make passing reference to them.

OK, so I'm old and the bifocals have a lot of overspray on them but damned if I can find a 2 0 0 2 in any of these lists. I have always heard they were E10's or 114's but ?? Not that it matters as BLUNT usually knows what part I'm talking about:-)

Didn't you hear, there is no 02 and there never was. Ask for your money back?

The distinctions between an E6, E10 and E20 have never been clear to me, which might explain going with the 1600, 2002 monikers. Using an "E" designation would have avoided much confusion with the year. But maybe there is a conspiracy here for Gov. Jesse to explore? Even back in the early 80's, German dealers and their parts countermen would understandably not know where to look to find a part for a "Bavaria."

I heard its not Steve, but really Biscus that is the brains of the operation. I can't say I am waiting for Blunt to send out a courtesy calendar featuring 12 poses of Jonny, but one might be worth something on Ebay!

Only "the" MikeS (who hangs near H-18 and befriends beavers) knows the "real" reason the Jeep got its name or what 442 really means. He's not telling (except in an upcoming column?).

From what I see, the E6 is the 4-door cars. Why doesn't the 2002 have an E designation when they made so many more than other models of the same time period that have one (ie E9)? I've had other people refer to mine as an E10, but I've never seen any info to back it up.

Thank you for answering the very question I asked in another post. Your explanation makes sense. I have laboured under the (apparently false) impression that the E114 referred to the basic 2002/1600 platform as did the E10 over the entire model run. Indeed, the E6 mentions touring but it was somehow unclear that it applied exclusively to that body shape and suggested it included some other models besides touring. I suppose the years listed should have been a big hint.

As simple as this seems, and as questioned by others, why doesn't everyone including BMW in its manuals, refer to their E10 the same way I hear people refer to their E9 or E24?
