I recently read an article that claimed that the E and M designations came during the production of the 2002 but wasn't in place during its development, which is why they are not always listed with the other 'E' numbers.

Hello Bill,

After being out of work for nearly 6 months I finally got a job. Unfortunately it was in India. Looks like the job will last a full year.

Need any curry?

Hoping to be back in April, and hoping to make Bo's Eureka (AR) event.

Hope you & the Family are well.

That does make more sense than what I said.

Having 4 sq light '02s, I guess I should have known.

That is correct as to the confusion of what year they started calling them E10s. But I still stick to the general idea that...........

....... It's just easier to explain since we don't have a date/year of when BMW changed their system.

Some cars had the "E" designation sticker on the fenderwell (I'm certainly no expert on this subject).

That one on the Colorado orange car is for European compliance and has nothing to do with the chassis designation.

Tom,

I think originally, these Euro stickers noted the E#. It's difficult to see, but in Jim's pic of the Colorado car, you can just about make out "typ E114" along the top of the sticker. The replacement stickers available today have "2002" or "2002 Cabrio" etc and no E# type. Don't know if the '74-'76 Euros had "typ E10" on their original stickers. I'll have to look through my saved pictures.

the original two door design that became the 1602/2002 and was approved for production in late 1965 was coded "E-114." See the picture on pages 24/25 of the original color rendering. The following two pages show a similar rendering of what became the Touring, coded E114K. This is further confirmed on page 66.

Interestingly, there's no mention of "E10" as a model code for the '02 anywhere in the book. However, I've read elsewhere that E10 referred to the modified body that was introduced in 1974--the squarelight.

But it would make no sense for the original '02 to be coded as an E10, becuase that design preceded the 2500/2800/Bavaria and the early six cylinder coupes, all of which have a lower E number than 10.

Hmmm, might take some research, but could make a good column...

cheers

1. If I told you what was in Hangar 18, I'd have to kill you (BTW, there is no hangar 18 at Wright-Patterson)

2, We actually do have a family of (real) beavers living right in our fair city of Beavercreek OH--first ones since the 19th century.

3. Two theories of where the Jeep name originated: first, a transliteration of "GP"--Armyspeak for "General Purpose" as in "Truck, 1/4 Ton, General Purpose" or from Eugene the Jeep, a character in the Popeye comic strip in the late 30s. Take your pick.

4. 442 (as in the Oldsmobile muscle car) stands for 4 speeds, four barrel carb and dual exhausts.

How old is that sticker? I'm not doubting its an E6, but that sticker looks suspiciously new compared to the VIN plate, which in itself is interesting, in that it only describes the model as a BMW Touring.

The VIN plate on my tii has Typ. 114 photo etched upon it.

The interesting thing about the Colarado E sticker is that it appears to say Typ.114/E6 but I cant quite make out the VIN to check if its a touring or not.
