I don't call that hardball. My feeling on taking someone's car to check it out has always been what if you wreck it...what if you keep it for a longer period of time than we agreed to and I miss a (potential) sale...what if the shop screws something up while "checking it out" where does that leave me as the seller?

As a buyer, I want some assurances that my interests are protected i.e. my MONEY. If you left a cash deposit of the purchase price and signed a written agreement, I am sure you would have no problem getting the owner to acquiesce. The problem with selling cars has been (and continues to be) the number of time-wasters that take time out of the seller's life and have no real intention of buying the car in the first place. I have sold dozens of cars and bought about the same number. I have never turned down that sort of request with a cash deposit of the asking price. The bottom line from a seller's point of view: show me the money. He is trying to sell a car, nothing more and nothing less.
