If you can find any paperwork (former registration) in the car, that will help. Hopefully it's been registered non-op, check for back DMV fees before you buy. Otherwise DMV will want a lot of money in back fees. It may have fallen off the DMV records if it's been parked for a number of years and if it wasn't ever registered non-op. It just depends on when it was last registered in CA. That happened to me on my former 73 Bavaria, PO parked it for 11 years, never registered the car non-op and it fell out of the DMV records. They would not let me keep the original CA blue plates on the car.
