I didn't plan on buying a car today

I got a call from a friend to come see some cars. Took the afternoon off and went and looked. Picked this up for $7500 - 84 911 Targa. Widow wanted it gone.

It's a 20 footer - but solid. 915 transmission rebuilt 2 years ago. Valve cover gaskets and timing chain gaskets as well. Service records back forever (her husband was first owner).

Needs new windshield and some other minor work. I think it will be fun.

But - I really didn't need another car.

Ken - you bought what I want someday.

Is the paint color Guards Red?? Kind of hard to tell from the pic.

I'm jealous, but then again I don't have any more room for more toys.

Well - to be honest, I was too caught up in looking for rust and oil leaks to check the paint code. But - it looks like Guards Red to me too. This will be the first red car I have ever owned.

And, my garage is well past capacity. Momma was pretty cool about having her car evicted though.

Like I said - it's definitely a 50 foot-er. Up close - It has the following:

Oxidized paint on rear 1/3 of car

Targa top in rough shape

back seats and rear carpet in rough shape (faded)

cracked windshield

missing front carpet.

Plywood in driver's footwell/pedal box looks pretty rough (I can't believe that's what Porsche was using).

steering wheel looks like someone tried to eat it. Lots of chunks missing.

steering wheel shakes a lot (I've researched, and it means a bad bushing).

Oil leak on left front cylinder (I don't remember the # order)

Oil pressure gauge pegs out on 5. I think the wire is off the sender.

Odometer doesn't work. Common problem when odometer reset is hit when car is moving, stripping out gear. Might have to send out for repair (I'm not brave enough to crack the case). Or - might just find a working "used" one that is close in mileage.

rear window seal looks like it needs to be replaced.

Hasn't run for 2 years. Ran rough on bad gas today. Going to take a can of seafoam with me when I go to pick it up, and fill it up with good gas as soon as possible.

Down the road I'll work on a tune up (oil, belts, plugs, and maybe electronic ignition conversion instead of points).

But, like I said, for $7500, seems like a deal still.

We'll see. Might be for sale next month.

Later,

Ken

I would have done what you have. Those mid 80's Targas are really nice.

i never intended to own a red car..

Red cars have been all over me for a while-

First new car was a red '92 Honda

The '71 VW is red

Second new 2000 Honda is red

Freebie '89 Integra was red

tii is Malaga red

I keep telling myself there will be no more red cars (but your Targa is nice ;-0).

Thanks Jim.

My buddy that bought the 993 Targa is already thinking of flipping it for an 8000 profit.

I'm going to keep mine. Years ago - I could have bought an 83 911SC in great shape with tons of receipts for 18000. Instead, I bought an 89 964 911 for 23K, which was a super huge lemon. I've always regretted that.

I hope this car is redemption....
