hazard switch question 1970 / 2002

I ran a search for "Hazard Switch" and did not have much luck. Now I know that there are posts on hazard switches, but nothing returned that really stood out.

My question: I just bought a 1970 2002 and there is a round red hazard toggle switch hanging from a circular switch with ~6 connectors on the back of the switch. It does not work, and I actually hear electrical crackling when I toggle it to ON. 1. Is this the stock switch? 2. If so, where is it supposed to mount? 3. Any troubleshooting tips to correct the gremlin?

oh yeah, it hangs near the driver's left knee below the dash

just hanging from the wires

Pull switch or push button?

a round red push button - push in once for ON / push again to turn OFF

Your switch should look like the one on the left--the right side is from a later car. It sounds like somebody did a hack job with an aftermarket switch.

Check for loose wires and scrubbing. If your hazards work, then the switch works. They usually mount in the center console, but I have a car with it underneath and hanging.

I see. So it looks like a hack job. Where should the orig hazard pull switch reside on the dash?

look for a hole on the dash(in that small area like a cup on the lower dash) left of the instrument cluster

replaced the hazard switch, and it works. eventually I would like to find an original hazard switch, but for now I have the same push/on push/off round button - hanging from the wires at my left knee. Anyone tried making a bracket for this thing? pics?
