What Wheels for an Early 1600?

ClayW

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some good looking wheels for my soon-to-be-aquired 1600. The car is Verona with short bumpers and round taillights. Nice, expensive wheels are in the budget, but I need to throw something on there. Bottlecaps are easy, but I was thinking of something a little more period appropriate...but they have to fit over my big brakes. Definitely 14" or 15". Any suggestions?

I thought that I remembered someone posting about VW wheels that looked like Alpina steel wheels or something....

Thanks in advance.

I really think 15"s are too much on a roundie, but I'm a sissy.

For a narrow 14" option, why not buy a new set of these early Euro E30 wheels: STEEL RIM SILBER 5JX14 ET:35 P/N: 36 11 1 125 684

I also have a newly restored and trued, professionally refinished set of early 13" tii wheels that are ready to go...I might sell them for the right price. These look very slick with the dog dish hubcaps.

wheels for first or early second gen VW Jettas - quite similar to an E30 steel wheel, use either a small flat hubcap or a small center cap and chrome lug nuts/bolts. If memory serves, they're either 15x5 or 15x5.5, offset is somewhere around et30 which is fine for '02s - should be able to find them easily at any decent sized P&P.

E30 steel wheels came standard on 91 318i 4 door models while two door 318is coupes came standard with E30 basketweaves. Try looking for 91 318i wheels, they came black but spray painted silver, they will look a lot like Alpina steel wheels. I've had two sets of them but sold them both (upgraded to bottlecaps on one car and parted the other car out). The plastic hubcaps that came with the E30 steel wheels make good frisbee's.

For interest's sake, here's what a set of 15" E30-style steelie reps look like. I'm not really feeling the look:
