Can anyone tell me what that red light is in the cluster, everytime i push a little silver button, this red light turns on in the cluster.? baffled.

It's a system check for the low Fluid/Pressure light for the Brakes.

No point in having a Brake warning light if you're not certain it works when it needs to. This lets you know that the circuit and the bulb are in working order.

On Euro models it was also a low fuel/reserve light when there is a third connector and corresponding wiring on the fuel sender.

We in the US did not get that feature. :(

It's a system check

I always wondered where all the horseshit about 'brake system tests'

came from... and then I read the little US flier that came with the owner's

manual for cars, maybe circa 1972.

Right there, in BMW black- and- white it claims that the little red light is

a 'brake system imalance check light' and that it indicates an imbalance

in the braking system.

Which we all know as horseshit.

It's just a float that tells you that you're running low on fluid.

You get to figure out the cause.

And the switch just tests the bulb not any of the little ancillaries

like, oh, the level switch, the wiring or the connections.

US law starting in 1968 mandated a dual circuit braking system and some

form of indication that there was a fault in said system. The wording must

not have been too specific, because almost every manufacturer did it differently.

Japanese cars split the systems diagonally, with a pressure sensor

between the two (Nissan in particular, I'm thinking of) and my roadster

has a little switch that, sure enough, just tests the bulb.

Many (most?) European manufacturers used dual circuit front calipers

and sent both circuits to the front, and only 1 to the rears. Most of them

seem to use floats in the fluid.

My friend's 72 E- type AND my '68 Volvo 122 use single circuit front calipers

and split front- to- rear. The Jag has a float, the 122... had nothing.

Volvo 144's used duals in front...

so on it goes.

Ok, I think I've bored even myself now.
