Hola '02 people,

My name is Jorge Méndez and I'm from Guatemala City, I want to share with you some pics of my '73 2002. I would also like to share the story.

My father bought me this car back in august 23, 1997 as a gift when I succesfully finished high school (I was just 17). We decided to keep it as a long-term project in which we would be restoring each and every piece as soon as we could. First we focused on engine and transmission, I remember one day on my way home I was at a light and when I engaged 1st gear and released the clutch I heard a big BOOM on the rear, first thing that came to my mind was "somebody hit me" but no, not at all. To my surprise the diff broke in pieces on the inside... Oh my God... This was just the first "And now what?"

I also managed to get a 5 speed tranny from a 320i US version, restored front and rear end including suspension, door gaskets, engine head rebuilt, new distributor, custom made headers, new radiator, 3 spoke steering wheeel, and then I decided it was time for a pprofessional body restoration. It was officially finished on february 2004, and since then it has been my pride and joy. I always wanted it to be my "weekend driver", thank God I accomplished that. My father was so proud of me and what I did to the car through all these years. He always told me how much he loved the 02 back in his days and we both enjoyed this one very, very much.

Now I understand him perfectly how he felt about spending time with me in such a project, since now I'm a father of 2 children of my own, my girl Danny 6yo, and Jorge Jr 5yo. Aso my Bimmer fleet grew something, I own 2 E36's (1 is the wife's) 1 E34 and 1 E53, but I think that all these bimmers would'n be in my garage now if I never owned the 2002, so the 2002 is guilty of that!!!

Now my 02 is much more than just a car to me, it is an invaluable jewel and piece of memory, since my father passed away on november 13, 2009 in a terrible car accident, he was 63. Whenever I take my car for a spin, I know my papa is there with me.... It feels great!!!

Hola Jorge aqui desde Honduras, very nice car, I think almost everybody that buys or owned one of these cars have some kind of memory tide to it,

well the first 2002 that I went for a ride belonged to a cousin in Guatemala it was a Golf yellow in 1974.

I bought a 1974 one owner car about 8 months ago and just about finished rebuilding it totally .

Jorge, the car looks wonderful! I was in Guatemala City last summer and saw an endless parade of early Japanese cars but only a couple of 02s. Yours must really turn heads!
