What kind of adhesive do I use to glue the black foam pieces that are near the fire wall. (Hood Side Seals). There is one on either side of the engine bay on the top of the fender. I believe they are there to prevent fumes from entering the passenger compartment.

thanks,

Paul

WURTH adhesive

or

3M weatherstrip adhesive (yellow or black in color)

most important - to clean mould release,

oil off of the rubber first, and the body before sticking

+1 for the 3M Super Weatherstrip adhesive but you MUST thoroughly clean the paint on the fender/cowl AND remove the mold release from the rubber seals before bonding.

Clean the mold release thoroughly, I have success with Weldwood Contact cement following the directions to the T.

Bill, you hurt me to the core:) I believe all the weatherstripping on our cars is EPDM rubber. EPDM is very difficult to stick to . Cleanlyness is next to godlyness, final cleaning of surfaces is with Isopropyl alcohol. Then goo the stuff on , I closed my hood for good compression, just make sure the gaskets are placed correctly.

The full link:

http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewtopic/p,672126/highlight,/#672126

The meat of the question:

NAPA or any autoparts store it is 08011 (3M Weather Strip Adhesive Black) specifically designed for EPDM rubber. The "mold release" which is felt on the surface is actually the problem with EPDM. The surface is continuously slippery like a mold release. The 08011 discussed here in the past works extremly well on the EPDM. It will also be relativley easy to remove when the gaskets become dry and in need of replacement, say in 30 years.

The 08011 can be removed with a solvent which will soften the adhesive. PUR adhesives, like Monkey glue, and epoxies can bond so well to the painted surfaces agressive abrasion will be needed to remove the gunk.

Just adding a bit.

Thanks for nudge Jim, been traveling, I'll fill you in on the details.

with a friend to pick up his Mom's new X5. Spent most of the day at the Performance Center, Museum (no 2002s) and Factory, got a new shirt. Spectacular trip...

That's great. I've not been there, yet. Hosting Dieter's Birthday Party on Sunday. I fear that Dieter will still be in the shop. Noise/Vibration problems came with the rebuild -- very annoying.
