  1. Whatever it was, it was well worth it. The finest and most expensive restorations in the world wouldn't come close to the originality and condition of this car.
  2. Belongs to FAQer Tom from Chicago area, it is the finest most original 2002 in existence. period. This is a great car to see in person and it should really be in a museum, but I'm glad its not. Here is a shot of Tom's and my car (and one of some ratty kit car) from the 2011 Survivor Collector Car Event in St. Charles IL.
  3. Thank you Paul, you asked great questions, were super easy to work with and I was delighted to find them a good home just north of the border. Looking forward to seeing pictures when the transformation is complete! Proceeds from the sale go to my 68's restoration fund. And now for a top tip. Uhaul sells a 15x15x48 box that is designed to ship a set of golf clubs. This box can be cut down to ~30 inches for the shipment of 4 (13" or 14") wheels together in one ~60lb box. (not considered oversize on weight or height) Double cardboard between the wheels and plenty of packing material in the sides and corners will get the job done.
  4. Recent photo of my 71 1600 with new fancy trim rings!
  5. Awesome! I have an early 71 1602 in Nevada (Jan 71) I assume very little change took place from 70. I'd love to see some pictures, and I'd be happy to share some too. Congrats! Ben
  6. This 1602 is in Italy but on US E b a y . What's up with the rear lights--Is it even possible to install them like this? Strange look. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-2002-1602-BMW-1602-sole-owner-completely-restored-/230717150192?
  7. Kudos for the opel steelies choice...I'm a fan. What variety are you using? I have a set of Kadet Rallye wheels (Below) in 13x5 that I use sometimes on my cars.
  8. Hi Mike, The dimension is 20cm About 18cm if I factor in the o ring. Other info: (little hard to read) VDO. 12.71 Made in Germany 39/2+/14 082 019 003
  9. The previous owner of my 92 Dodge 250 had installed a Rostra cruise unit back about 10 years ago. It still works great and keeps speed, even when pulling a trailer. I don't know how it works, it just does! Ben
  10. Thankfully, your package was insured...what amount do you anticipate receiving back from the USPS on a loss claim?
  11. All items shown are still available--Sold items have been removed and shipped. 2002 Holiday Blowout/Garage Cleanup Sale – Make Offer! Thanks! 2 Litre /2 Barrel Intake Manifold, prepped/blocked off for Weber 32/36 Rear Green Glass—Awesome Shape, No Defroster, can ship via bike box FedEx with insurance and fingers crossed: Brake Booster, Standard 2002, In storage since 1990 VDO Washer Pump (12V Works) and good jug, “aftermarket” cap Clutch Cover, 215mm, Sachs Remanufactured Bosch Starter, SR71X, Used Wiper Motor, 5 Pin, Removed from 72 2002
  12. Quesion, did you use the stock mounting bracket? The 19mm bushing looks like a slightly different design.
  13. I did this upgrade on the rear only on my 68 and it locks the RT side rear wheel under hard braking and no passengers. I just purchased this from Ireland to try and balance it back out: This brake bias valve installs inline to the rear brake circuit to allow adjustment of the hydraulic pressure to the rear brakes (reduction of pressure to the rear helps balance the braking of cars with too much rear brake or oversized wheel cylinders). It's very important that during heavy braking the rear wheels don't lock up before the fronts. Valve is threaded to accept standard BMW 10mm x 1.0mm brake hard lines.
  14. Fits any early roundie with the round shift boot. Plastic trans hump piece makes it a later unit. Correct; holes should not be there. The vinyl around the ashtray shrinks, you can paint the wood with gloss touch up paint, tighten the screws, or use slightly larger ones if they are stripped (they usually are) clean, clean, clean, and perhaps score $50 in the FS section.
  15. I picked up a used front 19mm swaybar (thanks Dave) without hardware to use on my 68 project. Question: Should I use a stock 20mm mount from a late Turbo? #3 - RUBBER MOUNTING ---- 01/1974 06/1975 ----- 31 35 1 106 862 I'm using these for the links:
  16. I have an oh-so long list once my car comes back from paint in 2 weeks. Good news the drivetrain is in and suspension done. I'll be installing all exterior brightwork, lighting, hiring out glass and re-installing the interior. Target is MidAmerica 02 Fest April 27 & 28 in Eureka Springs, AR
  17. This is what came on a factory rebuilt engine I have, it is a cast date '82, I have some others on the shelf, I'll investigate. I think the cover on my 5/68 was ribbed:
  18. The origins of this kit are unknown, but it is true that you can use old style R2 Bulbs or simply get H4 halogen bulbs on a P45t base. Daniel Stern sells NARVA brand. Upgrade your vintage European headlamps to modern-car light levels! These updated halogen bulbs (above left) fit and work correctly in all 1950's through 1980's European high/low beam headlamps originally equipped with tungsten R2 bulbs (above right) http://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html
  19. Yes...it's Chamonix and very lowered. As others have mentioned, I'd make it safe and legal then drive it around and enjoy it before you go crazy. Restoring this car to "former glory" will cost substantially more than buying an original car or a previously restored car. (not to mention your personal labor) Whet your whistle and then decide what you want to do (if you do buy it) Please post the VIN here and more pictures! Ben
  20. worth the asking price in parts alone. And worth saving in my opinion: http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,361517/
  21. YES--here is a sneak peak of the progress: ---October 2008--- ---Fall 2011---
  22. Thank you for the reply--I called my dealer and asked for the oldest parts representative (joking) and he was able to order the 20 and 25 mm plug no problem, and didn't make me buy 10 of each! Thanks again! Ben
  23. As a coincidence, I also need the rubber plugs for my project. I started a thread on the general section--no replies yet. http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewtopic/t,366145/
