  1. Don't worry, we wont break in, I'm sure you have a key hiding somewhere. Ben
  2. . . . I know this topic has been discussed before, but I cant find the answer on the search: Hi All, I picked up a set of used Bilstein HDs from a fellow FAQer. They are about 20 years old and have relatively low miles, the front inserts look great (obviously) the rears look OK, but the lower rubber bushings are dry and cracking. I know they can be rebuilt by Bilstein, but the cost rivals a new set. Questions: #1 Is there a simple way to find out if they are really any good or not? #2 Can the rear bushings be replaced? Mucho thanks, Ben

  4. ....I was able to order this item from BELL BMW Dealership online parts order catalog within the last year for about $36. I also said: (unless it became NLA very recently) it was not NLA. hit this link: http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=26 and enter in the part number: 71111128360 Item Number MSRP Core Price 71111128360 $42.95 $0.00 $36.51 7-TOOL BAG KPL Please don't have hurt feelings, the post was not a personal attack, just the facts as I knew them, as I was recently able to order this exact tool bag without difficulty. Perhaps the supply has now been extinguished and they are in fact NLA. I'm sorry if you felt my post jeopardized your credibility, I also stated that there was nothing wrong with buying low and selling high--this is AH-MRR-ICA after all. Kind Regards, Ben
  5. Yep--I ordered mine about 9 months ago from Bell BMW for about $36. (71111128360) Nothing wrong with a guy buying low and selling high--this item is simply not NLA, however, as Tilux states. (unless this happened very recently) Ben
  6. Blunt--it looks like you ended up getting the engine from Monte. If I recall when I looked at it when it was down here in Indiana, it had vintage chunks of underpants stuffed in the sides...looks like they are still there! I sure wish I could have purchased that engine and his car before he split it up, but it wasn't meant to be financially. Good luck with it! Ben

  8. Chicago FAQers--any word/details on the Windy City Vintage '07? Ben
  9. Blunt, you have the "center loop style" with the massive buckles--most 1970-71ish cars I see have these. Click the buckle to the center loop and then figure out which strap goes over the waist, bolt this one just behind the seat near the door opening. The other shoulder strap point mounts high just under the rear side windows. Believe it or not, I think these were thought to be an improvement over the really early "spaghetti" belts. I'm missing the fronts on my 68, but I still have the rears. Someone has installed Repa inertia reels for my fronts, but they are not 100% safe mounted to the stock location because the locating pin is gone and they can pivot, making them useless in a lockup situation. Inertia reels wont fit the back seat of these early cars because the cushion is in the way. Good luck. Ben
  10. EVERYBODY: Due to unforeseen circumstances, 02Nationfest has been cancelled for 2007. Fear not -- The dream of a nationwide 02 event has not been lost. We have high hopes of a bigger event next year with more regional event locations. Thanks for your continued enthusiasm and support of such an event. We also sincerely appreciate your continued support of the 2002 Registry and the Tii Register, the sponsors of the '02 Nation Fest. This information is being posted on other boards by the organizing team. __________________ Keith 1974 2002tii - "Stella" http://www.my2002tii.com
  11. All I have is the PO box that he used to accept payment, if anyone wants this, please send me a note through my profile page. His wife used the same address as the address return on the envelope she mailed me last week. I think compiling the notes from everyone and sending them to her with a card would be a great idea. I can do this once everyone has finished posting memories or best wishes to the family. Ben
  12. Hi all, I recently ordered some parts from FAQer DukeRimmer and I just received a letter from his wife letting me know that Mitch had passed away a little over a week ago. I searched the posts and didn't see any other announcement--I just wanted to let everyone know. DukeRimmer was always quick to offer great tips, pictures and had many hard to find parts that he would sell for fair prices. If anyone has any follow-up info, please feel free to reply. Thanks for everything Mitch, you will be missed! Ben Edit: It looks like he stated in previous a note to a FAQer below that he had been in the hospital for a nephrectomy which is the medical name procedure for removing a kidney. I don't know any more, but I assume complications from this procedure or a related illness took his life too soon. My last email from him came on May 24. Edit 2: On July 14th, I assembled a printout of all the member comments posted on this topic and mailed them to Mitch's wife.

  15. the seat cushion does not have the appropriate "cutouts" -- you can use later style belts in the front, mount the "b" pillar above the ashtray on the rear door panel as pictured. Are you sure the old lap belts are not hiding under the rear seat? --they can disappear down there. If you find them and if your kids are still in carseats, go to babies R us or similar and get something called a mighty-tite -- this will allow you to ratchet the carseat down securely. I have a set of front and rear lap belts from a 1970 that are in supurb condition (center loop style) I'd consider selling them.

  17. My 68 2002 came to me with OPEL steel wheels and the original steelies and 2 piece hubcap/trim rings in the trunk. Shortly after arriving from CA in 2005, I developed a leaking rear wheel cylinder. I decided to upgrade to larger rear 320i drums based on advice from the FAQ. Fast forward to now..I had the original wheels (Prod 4/68 - SUDRAC) blasted, primed and painted Polaris, got new 165R13 Tires, NOS trimrings and nice hubcaps in an effort to return to the early "1968 look" before heading off to V@V this week. BAD NEWS -- The steelies do not fit over the rear 250MM drums....I don't recall anyone having problems with the rears--only the fronts w/ caliper clearance... Anyone else successfully run 320i drums with early steelie wheels? Thanks, Ben
  18. Small nut welded from below, the dealer "BMW" battery fits/works with this setup.
  19. Convoy will be leaving early from Near northside of Indianapolis early on Fri moring, then on to Dayton. I currently have the radiator, waterpump, alternator and grilles out -- cross your fingers, I should be ready to go in just over a week! MichiganMike--let us know if you want to caravan. Ben
  20. I received a nice NOS waterpump (BMW - Cast 1982) from a kind gent on this board, and I noticed that the rotating resistance, (only compared to the toasted pump I just removed) is significantly increased vs the old one. The old leaky pump will continue to spin slightly on its own with a quick twist and the NOS one does not. Is this pump OK or is it a roll of the dice? This is my first pump swap and I've nothing to compare it to. Thanks for the help! Ben
  21. were these originally body color, then painted black on the visible portion that is directly behind the grilles? This is a 68 2002. Thanks! Ben
  22. I'm no student of science but when the fulcrum point slips when the top and bottom grips are drawn together--you have ineffective wrenching. Ben
