Slightly SouthWest of Indianapolis along US 40 (National Road) -- Growing area, new open air mall, schools are fine, don't hear too much about them.
If you need to live on the west side, also try Avon and Brownsburg.
Zionsville and Carmel are a smidgen elite, southside is a little blue, but getting fancier, eastside where I'm from (the oldest and earliest "nice part" of town 80 years ago) has a nice historical area where I used to live and is an OK place. Schools can be rough in the Indy Public School Area, stick to any of the surrounding township schools in Marion county. If you like to spend more than an hour in the car driving to work, try Northeast --Fishers or Noblesville. Finally, my hometown of Greenfield is 20 miles due East of downtown, also on US 40 but the other direction from Plainfield. This area is growing, schools are good and homes are a little cheaper.
If you have specific questions, please let me know--I'll try to be honest. Email me your needs and I'll try to recommend something. I now live due north 10 miles of downtown, bigger house, better school now that I've got a boy.
