  3. This is like one of those eye tests... Number one, or number two.  Number one, or number two..☺️

#1 is what the powder coating place calls "the standard".  Reminds me of the old VW bug engine shrouds.

#2 is what the powder coating place calls "satin black".  Which do you prefer?

I think #1 most closely matches the original when I have them both in my hands.  Hard to judge from photos.  Both are nice.

The airbox from my '74 tii is up next to be coated in #1...

@JohnS what paint did you use on that? I need to respray my gas tank and that looks like just the right color / sheen.

I had the early US tii airbox powder coated in what the placed calls "satin black".  IMO, the "satin black" powder coat is a little bit too flat compared with an original airbox, but it's Okay.  A while back I repainted my gas tank and I used a rattle can of Krylon "semi flat" black.  Matched really well.  Hope that helps,

    John

  5. It's probably not an issue now, but make sure you replace the "stock" clips/t-bolts with stainless if you can.  A guy used to sell sets of the stainless clips back in the day on here, now maybe W&N or others?.  The old stock clips were rusted little blocks when I removed the original ones.  Don't do that again...

  6. I noticed this.  I have big hands.  My trick, wrap an ace bandage around your forearm to protect yourself when you go in there.  Have a magnet ready to retrieve the nut when it falls and you have to try again.  I replaced with stainless clips so hopefully never again.  Very hard, nearly impossible on a square tail with the extra mounting for the jack.  The other side ain't so easy (at least for me) either.

Little stubby 1/4" ratchet from Harbor Freight, short socket.  Dum dum to hold the nut in the socket...

    Beer, bandaids.

If there's a better way, I'd love to hear it too.  There's usually a trick that only the pros know.  Please let there be a trick... 🙂

  8. What does 'yoot' mean?  Really, I didn't know.  Looked it up and LMAO.  I travelled in Jamaica in the 80's and attended a few Reggae events.  I should have known.  The Yoot Dem, they drive ya crazy mon

Yout originates in Jamaican Creole, where youth is pronounced like yoot and refers to young people. Yute dem, for instance, means “children” or “youth” more generally. By the 1990s–2000s, yout became a slang equivalent for “dude” or “man” among West Indian migrants in London, New York City, and Toronto.

  9. I really didn't intend for this to sell the items, but both pieces are pending sale.  I guess my "Bro deal" meter was Okay.   I'll know for sure on June 15th at the upcoming Cars & Coffee event in Los Gatos.  I'll be a good boy and post all future For Sale items in the Classified section where it belongs.  10% of the proceeds from my sales will be donated to this wonderful FAQ.  Thanks folks,

    John

  10. My 74tii still has its resistor wire in place and it does run the full length from Fuse #12 along the firewall all the way to the coil.  No green wire spliced in at all.  It's supposed to be 1.8 ohm in total.  I suspect the length of the resistor wire is twice as long as that used on the regular non-tii square taillight models which are supposed to measure 0.9 ohms.

Condition is everything.  Both could be junk. Make sure that the "Bro" is going to accept that fact.

That's the main reason I like the idea of an in-person cash transaction.  Buyer gets to look, touch and inspect the parts before laying any money down.  Under the complete understanding that everything is sold as-is.  That's what I did 11 years ago.  And not having to ship is a win-win for both parties involved.  I really hate selling stuff.  It's not my thing.  I'm great at buying, not so much with selling.  Bro deals will be made, I guaranteeee! 🤣

  12. Looking forward to the upcoming Bay Area Swap and Show Reboot on July 13th at the Brisbane Marina.  Not so much to share parts, but to be with the people.  Aloha,

My opinion for what its worth.

Those are realistic current "market value" prices.

Have to sweeten them up a lot to qualify as "bro deals"

I value your opinion.  Would $1600 for the pair be bro?

  14. I know that folks hate seeing a post where somebody asks "What's it worth".  To me all of this stuff is priceless.  I recently lost access to the free storage area where I've kept many spare parts and need to liquidate some of the bigger heavier items.  My goal is to give some "bro deals" to my friends in the community and not have to ship anything.

    2 questions:

    (1) Is $1200 a "bro deal" for a used Getrag 245 Overdrive these days.  Purchased from a reputable seller around 11 years ago and has been in a box ever since.  Used, never installed "Gambler" transmission no guarantees?

    (2) Is $700 a "bro deal" for a used E21 3.91 Limited Slip Diff.  Purchased again around 11 years ago and in a box ever since.  Looks clean, never installed, no guarantees?

Be honest,  I know the old "We used to buy these for $50, blah, blah, blah"  Today's market.  I don't want to gouge anyone...  I'm bored on a business trip and would love to hear your opinions.  Flame suit on...

When I got my car I had a similar issue, especially when warm. Jumping the solenoid started the car fine. Testing with the multimeter saw 12v at the starter trigger wire, so the ignition was working and current was flowing. BUT the damn thing wouldn’t trip the solenoid.  I finally figured out that I had really low amps on the ignition wire, low enough to not fire the solenoid. I never found the problem area because I yanked everything for my M20, but my thought is that the start wire from the ignition was failing and most strands were broken. A few strands is all it takes for the volts, but you need them all for the amps.

Might not be the issue, but it’s something to consider. Poking around with the multimeter will help you narrow down the problem.

And yeah, as others have said, you don’t have a separate starter relay since the solenoid IS the relay. You do have the neutral/park start inhibitor though.

I've lived with this issue on my '73 for years.  "Damn thing wouldn't trip the solenoid."

I added a Bosch Universal Starter Relay Kit Bosch wr1 on the power to the Solenoid and it works, but not great.  It's a stop-gap measure until you dive in and replace the starter.  Good grounding is also key for the stater and switch to work correctly.

One of the more boring pedestrian shades 🙂

After enduring years and years of people coming up to me with the "Oooh  Cool Car", "What year", etc.  when I drive my Inka car, I can appreciate the pedestrian shades.  That's why I drive my fjord (mostly gray primer) car the majority of the time.  It's undercover and I like it that way.  Best wishes, I'm sure you'll do that car proud.
