  1. I restored these wheels using the 1Z and Wurth products. Step 1: I bought these 35 year old wheels from Jan. They were in very good condition for 35 year old wheels. Had the wheel checked to make sure they were not bent and they were fine. Step 2: Had the wheels media blasted down to bare metal. Step 3: Wiped them down with Wurth cleaning solvant. Step 4: Painted them with 1Z self eteching primer ("Haft-Grund"). Step 5: Painted them with 1Z Silber Paint. Step 6: Painted them with Wurth Clear. Step 7: Drink Beer, let wheels bake in sun. Total Cost: Paint $170(with ship) - 2 cans solvent, 3 cans primer, 3 cans silver, 3 cans clear. Media Blast: $120

  4. That's a sweet looking car. I really like those wheels with the flares. What type of wheels are those? John
  5. I use the TECHRON Fuel Injection cleaner about twice a year in all of my cars. John
  6. 185/70 13 tires need a minimum of a 5" wide rim. The steel wheels from the later square tailed cars are 5x13 with an ET (offset) of 29 mm. Those fit perfectly on the 02 with 185/70 13 tires. The tii alloys are 5x13 with ET 26 and also fit perfectly with 185 tires. The steel wheels from the E21 (320i) look almost identical to the later style 2002 steel wheels, but are 5.5x13 with an ET18 which will fit the 2002, but aren't the ideal offset. John
  7. Hi Ray, Any discount codes for FAQ'ers on the E30 M3 decks? Thanks, John
  8. Assuming a reasonable price, I would be interested in a set or two. Thanks, John
  9. Lars, Thank you for the technical drawing. The frame I'm using looks very similar and does center the seat correctly. I will have the seats out of the car soon, so will measure and compare with your drawing. John
  10. This FAQ should help http://www.bmw2002faq.com/content/view/45/32/
  11. Is it possible that the Touring has the optional 'sport' (quick ratio) steering box? John
  12. Very nice looking car. I'm a big fan of keeping 'em stock. And I can't think of a better place to own a 2002. Highway 1 south was made for these cars. Welcome, John

  14. I've had good luck with the Die Hard International series #31247 Group 47 650 CCA 790 CA
  15. You need to make sure that you use a matched set of components from the same year of tii '73 or '74. Things I know that are different: Distributor: '73 is centrifical advance, '74 uses vacuum advance. Manifold: '74 has extra pipe for vacuum advance hose. Air Filter Housing: '74 Has extra air limiting device mounted on air filter housing for vacuum advance. Throttle body: Difference between the '73 & '74 in how you adjust. I've heard that the '74 is easier to adjust. Injecton pump (curve): I think that there are differences between the '73 & '74, but I don't know the specifics. And then there's the '72 with the different 121 head which I know nothing about. ;-)
  16. Wow Esty, The truck looks awesome. Cool steering wheel. Very nice. John
  17. Wow, very nice. I need to get my '74 tii painted. Will be looking you up Bart. Brian D. had given me your name at the Brisbane show. Nice job, John
  18. I'll start. My first BMW was back in 1986. My '74 tii "The Thrasher" that I still drive today. The first thing I did was remove the mini-lite wheels that came on the car because I didn't like the way that they looked. The paint was pealing and the metal underneath looked sort of grey "like lead". I ended up giving them away along with the original magnesium lugnuts. The rims were 6x13 and made of magnesium, little did I know. I installed 6x14 "bottle caps" instead. Next, I removed the original "black" coil and replaced it with "what I thought was an upgrade" blue coil. I even remember the mechanic saying it was a downgrade. I didn't care, I thought it "looked" better so I had him install it anyway. He did bypass the ballast resistor correctly, so it was fine. The next thing was replacing the original aluminum wiper blade holders with plastic Bosch units. Again, I thought they looked better. What a shame. I remember those original aluminum units stamped with "Made in England" and TriCo, and I threw them in the trash. That's it for me... Next
  19. Also, If you haven't replaced the hoses from the fluid resevour to the master cylinder recently and also the grommets where the hoses connect to the master, make sure you check for leaks when you first presurrize the system. Good to try this first before filling pressure bleader with fluid (if you choose to fill it at all). If you see any leakage under pressure, you need to fix that first (ask me how I know). Also, under pressure, you might also see leakage at the grommet on top of the clutch master too (ask me how I know that too). Good luck, John
  20. Some folks (like me) don't like to fill the bleeder with fluid because it's a pain to clean up when you're done. Instead they just use it for the pressure (I stick to around 12 lbs.) and have to repeatedly depressurize and fill up the brake fluid resovour. There's a good FAQ on bleeding the brakes that you should read. John
  21. Many beers are consumed whenever I work on my cars. Except when I'm working under jack stands. I guess that's why I like working on the cars so much John
  22. Killer pictures Daniel, Your cell phone takes better pictures than me/my camera. Jan's touring looks awesome. Thanks for sharing the pictures, John
  23. I'm just about to pull the box on my '73. Did the '74 last year and used one of these brackets that used to be sold on the FAQ. I used pop rivets and JB weld underneath and it worked great. It made adjusting the heater valve cable easier with the box not yet installed in the car. I'm not sure, but maybe you can still get them from CPI auto?
