  1. OK, here we go again! My dad found this one, he was at this race. The 1952 street race at Watkins Gen, going into the first corner, he claims # 21 is a BMW. Not sure I see it but maybe someone here can shed a little light on it for me!
  2. OK, I know its not a BMW but I'm hoping you find this worthy! This is how Milliken's Corner got its name on the original Watkins Glen Road Course. This corner was a sharp 90 degree left at the bottom of a mile long hill. Bill Milliken flipped the Bugatti and walked away from it. To this day that is referred to as: Milliken's Corner. Still looking for the 328 at the 1948 race.
  3. OK, I know its not a Racing picture, but this was taken in 1949 or 1950 at the original street races in Watkins Glen. According to my dad it belonged to an opera singer who always came to the races and used to sing the national anthem. It is located on 5th street just after turning onto the main straight. The 2nd porch on the right is/was my grandparents house (where my mother grew up). I will keep looking, I know there was a 328 in the very first race in 1948 and I am still looking for some race shots of that.
  4. Mike, I had a 71 1600 for a while in the mid 80's (Still have the motor & transmission) and it did not have the upgrades such as the black instrument faces and lower side moldings. Don't have the VIN on me but when I go to where the engine is stored I will get it to do the vin search with & see if indeed those items may have come on the car. If my memory is correct, the 2 model years (70 & 71) were identical save the front seat belts which clipped onto a metal ring instead of the old tab & lever belts. 5. Photos will be a great help. Also the running condition of the car. My 1600 is a 1970 and you really don't see many around much anymore so I'm not quite sure what the values of them are at this point. We will be able to give you a better idea when we see pictures and have some more info on the running condition. If it has a solid body and is mechanically sound, and you can get it for 500, DO IT! Good luck and hoping to see some pictures soon.
  6. My son wouldn't let the Valet at the Ganassi dinner park the car! He followed a 911 in & the Valet hopped into the 1600 and rode with my son to park it. Said that he was way more interested in the 1600 than the 911! This 1600 has spent its entire life in upstate New York! It started in Ithaca & then to me in the Glen. LOTS of welding & other parts on it! It has been rebuilt and repainted twice. I have way more in it than the car is worth, but NOTHING matches the sentimental value of it!
  7. Thanks for all the nice words! I have owned this car for 30 years and driving it yesterday was like driving it for the first time again! Danz3: As far as I know, mine is about the only one around in the southern tier/southern finger lakes region. Nice to know there are others still around!
  8. Finally was able to get the 1600 out of storage today! Drove her home with the windows down & sunroof open! Boy I love this car! It was the first car I ever bought & still is my favorite car to drive! Looking across the valley in the last picture, right where the utility pole is on the other hill is WGI, Tons of fans in town this weekend for the NASCAR road race at the Glen. My son will be taking this to the Corning Museum of Glass tomorrow night for a benefit dinner honoring Chip Ganassi. I'm sure it will turn a few heads!
  9. Also try to explore taking a tour of Munich in a Vintage BMW. When I went a few years ago I was unaware of this. I am not sure how it is arranged though. Ask at the Welt or when you make your reservations for the factory tour. Also make sure you take the museum tour. It would be a good idea to make reservations for that as well. I also believe BMW has a performance driving school out near the Munich Airport but not sure of the particulars. If you are in Munich for a while, make sure you hit any of the Beer Gardens and Beer Halls, the English Gardens and if you are so inclined, a trip to the Concentration Camp at Dachau (that was probably the most interesting and thought provoking part of my trip).
  10. Just thinking about it a little more. After the track was bought by Corning inc. they brought the IMSA series in for the 6 hours. One year, local nascar driver Geoff Bodine drove a Camaro in GTO with Jack Baldwin and won their class. He was actually just as fast as Baldwin was and did a pretty good job.
  11. You got it! BP. Benny Parsons. You usually had some interesting drivers and cars entered in those 6 hour races. They were great races when it was part of the world endurance championship. Usually had some F1 drivers too. I remember Riccardo Patrese in one of the Lancia Beta Monte Carlos, they were fast!
  12. Nice try, I'll give you a clue: It was at Watkins Glen in 1977, 6 Hour race. But not Ronnie Peterson...... Keep Trying!
  13. Strietzel, by his grandmother who thought he looked like a Christmas fruitcake (Stollen?) Also known as the "Regenmeister" for his abilities to race in the rain. I saw him lead the USGP for several laps in the rain in the Alfa Romeo in 1977. He was the class of the field. What made it more amazing was the fact that he did it with no clutch. If I remember correctly, that was the reason he spun in the toe of the boot & retired. So.... On with some more Stuck trivia: Most of you probably know where this is, but WHO was his co driver & what was the race?
  14. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9IV-jwVR30 Yeah, he took the win on both weekends! The above was his class winning run on Fathers Day. I was a second and a half behind him. He ended up finishing 4th in Pax ahead of most of the other Stock (or Street as it is called now), and beat all of the Subaru WRX's and everything in stock except a Mitsubishi Evo! I finished 11th in Pax. Not too bad for a tired old 318ti! It was one of the best Fathers Day ever. I know having a competitive spirit and the desire to win is strong, but watching your children work hard and have success was much more rewarding than any personal accomplishments! Great Fathers Day!
  15. My son & I are competing in the Glen Region Solo Event in our 99 318ti M-Package (G-Stock). Still working hard to beat the Focus ST's. Check out this go pro video of my son & I at our last event. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFYALNk64iM I'm on the left, he's on the right. He of course used his fastest run and one of my slowest!
  16. Recaro's out of a wrecked 320i sport. Notice the passenger seat is a little bent. They are in great condition and still have the BMW roundel on the outside of each seat. All I had to do to mount them in was remove the runners from the old seats & put them on the Recaro's. Took about 20 min. They are STILL the most comfortable seats I have ever had in any of my cars!
  17. VERY NICE! Takes me back to 1984 when I bought my 1600 from its original owner, same wheels & hubcaps, bumpers etc.! Unfortunately mine didn't look quite that good as I am in upstate NY. You are going to have a TON of fun with that thing! ENJOY!
  18. +1 on Denker's Post! About 10 or 12 years ago while attending the 6 hour race at the Glen, I had my 1600 parked behind one of the grandstands, as I approached the car there were a few people looking at it. I was going to talk to them about it but as I was getting nearer to the car, I heard them say "Yes, It's an MG, That's what BMW stands for: British Motor Works". At that point I just continued walking by as if I had no interest in anything at all.
  19. I am headed to Lexington, Ky this weekend to pick up my daughter from UK. She will be returning in August with our 2000 528i. I am hoping the knowledgeable participants of this forum may be able to let me know where some good independent repair shops are in case she needs some work done on the 5. I am hoping to check a few of them out when I am there this weekend. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  20. Do you have the VIN # from the engine block? That would help in identifying the motor. It looks like it may be a Tii motor without the full fuel injection system. I am not sure though as I am more familiar with non-tii motors. Where is this and the car located? Any pictures of the car or any other parts?
  21. Taught both my son (now 21 with a 99 318ti, 02 325ci we use for autocross & track days, and his daily driver is a 86 MR2) and my daughter (now 18 with the old family 528i) on the 1600. It was very easy for both. Neither one of them however, like the lack of amenities in the 1600. My daughter prefers her 528i with power everything! Enjoy the time while you can. Both kids are off to college & its not quite the same without them around!
  22. Andretti in the old Pits at the Glen after winning the Pole in '68!
  23. I had a 71 1600 back in the mid-80's that was badged 1600, not 1602. Not sure if previous owner had changed it but it was the 1600 badge. Maybe it was an early 71 before they went to the 1602 badge. I will have to look for the old registration and see if I can find the VIN to see. Could be that they used up the 1600 badges before they used the 1602 ones?
