  1. 70 1600, Built in Nov. 1969. Came with side markers both front & back but when I replaced both front fenders years ago, I went without the front side markers.
  2. Excellent film. I was never able to see Senna race in person but think at least one driver could match him for car control. I was lucky enough to watch Gilles Villeneuve at the Glen in 1979. Driving the Ferrari 312 T4 in the rain, watching him through the 90, the chicane & the esses, WOW. He was much faster in the wet than Alan Jones' Williams, which was the fastest car in the dry by far. Villeneuves car control was AWSOME. Check out the 1979 USGP on you tube & you will see a true master at work!
  3. I have owned my '70 1600 since 1984 in upstate New York. I purchased the car from the original owner who was a proffesor at Cornell. The vehicle has spent its entire life in upstate New York. (you want salt, we have salt, salt, & more salt!) When I bought the 1600, I had to replace fenders, rockers, & wheel arches. The rest of the car was solid. I drove the car for 3 winters & I had to replace the same parts plus some floor panels. I then refused to drive it in the winter. The 1600 was restored in the early 90's & looks as good today as it did when it was finished.(When I can figure out how to upload photos I will). My advice: Don't drive in the snow & salt! My 1600 was rustproofed new & again during the first restoration, It still rusted! There is no way you will keep rust off that car if you drive it in the salt. Been there, done that! If you are not really concerned with it, drive it. I wanted to preserve mine so I bought winter beaters ranging from VW's, to Mazdas, to a 1970 Buick LeSabre(Ouch)! But it preserved the 1600 and I am a proud 27 year owner of a 1970 1600! (It is still my favorite car to drive!) Good Luck!

  5. After 2 Solex rebuilds, my '70 1600 started to run smoother, took it out, got caught in a downpour (3" of rain in 15 min.), alt belt strated to slip, broke the retaining clip on right rear brake, alt shorted out & distributor cap cracked! (all in a 15 min span). Took a week for an electical shop to tell me they could not rebuild the alt, had to find the clip for the brake & wait for the alt from Bav auto. Also replaced the dist. cap. Alt & voltage regulator showed up today! Installed all of it & finally drove it for the first time in over 2 weeks. It ran the best it has in several years. I found myself making excuses to go out & drive it everywhere. That is still my favorite car to drive! Will be taking it to the vintage weekend at The Glen in a few weeks! 2 questions for anyone: I have not been able to attach any pictures to my posts, and: Who do I contact with my VIN # to get the build & shipping details of my 1600? Thanks for the help & keep those 02's out & about!
  6. I will try contacting the member BLUNT! Thanks for the Info. I was just in Penn Yan in the Wife's X5 Friday night. If you are back in the area (Penn Yan) try a place called Lloyd's Limited, an English style Pub, not too bad but no good German beers. Wayne is only ablut 15 miles from WG and a nice drive through some of the hills. You are dead on with the fact that there are NO 02's in the area. I bring the 1600 to the Grand Prix Festival every year & I am usually only one of a handful (sometimes the only) of BMW's at the festival. For any fans of Vintage racing, the Festival is usually the 1st or 2nd weekend of September & is a great time, give a shout if you are in the area for it. And if anyone has any ideas on that clip/spring, please let me know. Thanks, Joe
  7. Just had a bad trip with my '70 1600 this afternoon. About 5 mikes from home, the left rear retaining clip for the brake shoes broke, the shoes came loose & had some burning brakes by the time I got home. The question I have is: Does anyone know where I can find the clips for a 1600? I am pretty sure the diameter of the rear brakes on the 1600 is 1 inch smaller than the 2002. I had a hard time about 15 years ago finding the right shoes for the 1600 but eventually did through a local NAPA store. I was not able to replace the clips so I had to use the old ones & it finally caught up with me. Any information would be a great help!
  8. Just a quick thanks to all who responded with information about sights (BMW Museum) and Refreshment (Beer Halls) while I am in Munich, your help has been greatly appreciated and I am looking forward to seeing some of the sights suggested by everyone! Thanks again! Joe
  9. Gordon, Thanks for the Info! I have a good list of Brew Houses I will be visiting while in Munich thanks to your help! Enjoy! Joe
  10. Mike, Thanks for the info, I will keep an eye out for test cars & post any I may come across! I can't wait to get there! Joe
  11. I am going to be traveling to Munich at the end of the month & have set up tours through the BMW Factory & Museum. Does anyone have info on these tours & should I be looking at something else to do there?(along with or instead of the tours). Any information that you have about the museum and factory would be greatly appreciated!
  12. Thanks to all for your ideas, I will continue with the cleaning of the idle jet. I will also look into cleaning the fuel pump as well as intsalling a 2nd in line fuel filter. Joe
  13. I have just started having a problem with my 1600 not idling. It was stored in a climate controlled facility for 7 months, started & ran great right away. after driving a couple of times, the motor does not idle. It starts fine, runs great under acceleration and at more than half throttle. When coming off the accelerator or going along at 1/4 or 1/3 throttle the car runs rough & bucks. I have cleaned the carb & this seemed to cure the problem for about 1 min. Then the motor went back to no idle & rought running at low throttle pressure. Am I going in the right direction looking at the Carb or should I be looking into something else? The motor seems to be failing to run due to a fuel issue , it does not have the characteristics of ignition and timing. Any help or suggerstions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!
