  1. Looks great. She'll treat you well.

If you're planning on doing some work to it, consider a short bumper conversion along with that 5 speed. As everyone here will tell you: upgraded shocks, swaybars, and springs are a must! Check out Ireland engineering for parts. The FAQ has lots of articles and places to look for ideas.

    Good luck and enjoy it!

  2. Carter,

Welcome and congratulations on your new 2002--looks nice. To get more power from an engine you need to understand it as a system. Here are a few links to get you started, and there are further links within these that lead to good content. While the first topic is "engine rebuilding", we get into a lot on the performance side and you will see all the questions that you need to answer before investing your hard-earned money.

I will echo some of what others have said above--we all want more power, but the place to start with any car is safety (first and foremost--seat belts good, seat mounts solid, brakes good, etc). The tried and true is "make it stop (brakes), make it turn (suspension), and last make it go (higher diff ratio, lower weight, more power)." If you want to be fast from a stoplight you need more power. If you want to be fast in the curves (closed-circuit for any real speed) then you need to learn car control and how to carry momentum. I.e., spend your money on high-performance driving schools, not power upgrades. This has the added benefit of making you safer on the road--increased situational awareness, refined psycho-motor skills, ability to remain calm in an emergency situation and more.

Do your research and we will be happy to respond to your questions. Please do look into a driving class such as Tire Rack Street Survival if you have not already. This is a one-day class for about $75 that gives you 3 hours of-in car with an instructor on a skid pad and other exercises to learn car control. There is one coming up in Portland, Oregon on October 12.

Very worthwhile, I think something like this should be required of ALL drivers before they get (and renew) their licenses.

    Best, Fred

That second thread you linked was started by me. I can advocate for the following after a few months with my car:

Swaybars, shocks, springs, weber. It's all you need for now. Seeing as you just turned 16 and can't drive yet, you don't really understand how little the actual numbers matter. The experience of the car is what's fun, not "180 horsepower". If you still want more after the suspension and 32/36, like I do, go for the 38 weber and 284 cam. Plenty of car for a kid to handle. Check out Ireland Engineering for the suspension parts - that's where your budget is best spent.

  3. So after my initial purchase disaster documented elsewhere on the forum I finally have found a solid 75 2002 and want to go racing! (in a parking lot)

    http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/154958-bad-purchase-horror-story-and-other-questions/

I have read as many posts as I can but have some questions...

My plan is to start on suspension and then just go drive. I am looking at the Ireland Stage 2 spring / sway kit and 'Sport' springs. Any strong feedback one way or the other on this package?

I will research tires but as an all rounder love the Dunlop's on my other car.

Ok, lets talk seats. As I am tall I like to add a full bucket or classic bucket (Corbeau, BF Nurbergring etc). These are non reclining but upholstered with some padding. I assume this is OK in FSP given the spec of "Any fully padded and upholstered front seat"

Next bumpers. I love the naked front look and saw a FSP 2002 running this way recently. The rules would suggest otherwise and that the bumpers must stay. Did I interpret wrong or just witness some lax scrutineeirng? My car already has the Euro, smaller bumpers and apparently the earlier, lighter doors. Will I get thrown in jail, or worse a faster class for this if word gets out?

All for now, much more to come,

    Thanks

    Sam

Congrats on the purchase. I've heard nothing but great things about IE's spring and swaybar kit and plan on installing one on my car at some point in the near future. But my car is a street car, not an AutoX/track car. They lower a stock car 1.25" from what I understand. Looks good for street with 15" wheels. Might want to cut them, or consider coilovers if it's a track only car. I'd pair the kit with the suggested shocks in the description on their website. The guys over there are really nice and Ive emailed them with questions several times and always received a great response. For seats, I like the look of vintage-racing style buckets. Can't go wrong with that.
  4. I don´t really want a different cam, I think. I rarely do high-rpm rally driving. i drive it to work in the summer, and to buy ice cream with my girlfriend.

If that's the case, you probably want 40s or a 38/38 downdraft. Your best bet for a seasonal daily driver is a 284 cam and 38/38; it will probably produce more power than 40s. 40s and the cam would also be a good combo. I haven't heard of anyone running 45s with a cam any lower than 304

  5. Introducing myself and Snowy . 1972 chaminox, blue interior, twin webber 45's. I have now cut out all ( i hope) the rust . New front screen and new seals all round. I'm now doing the interior and rebuilding the sunroof.

45s?! Damn! Any internal modifications, or stock pistons, cam, head etc?

  6. Please excuse the novice question but, what size of tires are you folks planning on running on these rims?

(If I understood correctly the intent is to run them with unmodified fenders?)

    Thanks,

    Jim

I think the size on 15" would be 15x7/et25/4x100 with 195/50-15 maybe 195/55-15 tires if you're trying to run under stock fenders. Might need to roll for clearance though... Have a look at the wheel fitment guide, that's what I'm basing my guess on.
